What's the highest removal quote you've had?

I'm panicking! Just had the first removal firm round to give a quote. He said he has to go away and think about it before giving a price but reckons it will take two days. It's a three bed on three floors but we have a LOT of stuff. Two huge sheds packed full and lots of garden stuff.

So I can brace myself for the price, what's the highest quote you've had?

We were in a large four bed semi with a loft full of stuff plus garden furniture, a shed, a garage. It took them two days to pack us and two days to move us. One firm wanted £4K, and we paid £2.2k including packing. Worth every penny. At one point there were ten men lifting boxes!

ExpatForLife · 30/06/2021 12:16

We just got our first quote for packing / moving a 5 bed semi w/ garage, shed, loft. A bit of sticker shock as the quote was £5! The place was strongly recommended by friends who just moved, but I'm going to be getting more quotes for sure (and watching this thread).

We had this sort of thing. A skip BEFORE you move is circa £120. Do you really need to take ALL of it with you?

bookit · 30/06/2021 12:20

Oh wow! £4K and £5k?!! Until they turned up today I was hoping between £1,200 and £1,500. We're doing our own packing (I know everyone says get them to do it but I'm too much of a control freak and too worried about things going missing etc) so that might shave off a few pennies.

Oh I wish I could! Two teens with ASD who can't part with anything (the move is affecting their mental health so not the time to be fighting that battle). So yes, my 16 year old son's massive collection of wooden train track, and my 15 year old daughters silver cross dolls pram plus any other toy they've owned and about 10,000 teddies!! Tempted to hire a storage unit so we don't have this problem next time!

Please dont try and do it yourself if you have lots. If you have special needs teens you will need to look after them. Honestly dont even think about it. Our removal company used the wives and mothers of the removal men. They came in the day before and literally sat on the floor and were like a swarm of bees. Nothing got broken and they knew what they were doing (unlike you and I).

It wasnt much more cost wise

Undersnatch · 30/06/2021 12:29

I think our highest was 1.5k and we went with the cheap option of guys with a van from gumtree. Long story short is I will never ever do that again! Pay the money and get people who know what they are doing.

nutellamagnet · 30/06/2021 12:30

Packing was about £500 of the entries quote. It was £200 for the unbreakable things and £300 for the breakable stuff. (I don't know why they quoted it in two parts). It was the best decision we made, and I say that as two control freaks.

If they quoted you £5, bite their hand off!!!
Livingintheclouds · 30/06/2021 13:06

I only got one quote as first three I called either were not packing 'due to covid' or were booked up. I got quoted £900 including packing to their own storage and £1,100 to later move the stuff 70 miles including ferry costs to new house, as well as collecting another load from a storage unit. House was four bed four reception, not a lot of furniture but over 50 paintings and countless boxes- I would not consider packing myself ever.

Starseeking · 30/06/2021 13:55

I didn't actually bother getting a range of quotes, just the one. I went onto my local area Facebook page and typed in Removal Companies. This one came highly recommended from lots and lots of posts (so not just their wife and friends!). It cost £850 for moving a 3 bedroom house into storage.

If we wanted them to pack beforehand as well, it would have been an extra £550, so we said no as my EXDP wouldn't have it.

I highly recommend getting the professionals to move you. 6 men had all our things on 2 vans in 2 hours, my EXDP could NEVER have done what they did, despite him almost convincing me to leave transporting our things to him. For peace of mind, get people in who know what they are doing!

I just paid £600 - small three bed semi, no shed or garage and empty roof space. 1 Mile move

friendlycat · 30/06/2021 17:11

£3k with packing service and moving 60 miles. But I did pay all of the insurances some of which perhaps were unnecessary.

I was told that I had a lot of stuff which I did and a full garden shed and a lot of garden pots. 3 bed semi.

I think removals are very busy at the moment and prices are high.

MarianneUnfaithful · 30/06/2021 17:39

How far are you moving, OP?

catnip21 · 30/06/2021 20:23

Our highest quote was about £2,400!! To move a 3 bed terraced five minutes down the road!

We had two other quotes that were £880 and £750. We went with the cheaper option that came highly recommended by friends and they were fab. With all our quotes we did our own packing. I would recommend a packing service for sure!

KingdomScrolls · 30/06/2021 20:33

We moved from a one bed flat to a house about 25 miles away, we paid £450 but packed ourselves, only a flat and no DC at the time so didn't take long. The highest quote we had was over 2k! My dad asked if they planned to move us with a golden horse drawn carriage 😁

FakeFruitShoot · 30/06/2021 20:38

Ours was £1800 inc packing service and dismantling / rebuilding furniture and climbing frame.

4 bed detached to 7 bed over 3 floors. 2 miles distance.

When we lived in a 3 bed small detached Pickford's quoted us £2100 inc packing service to move us half a mile. Local firm was £850. 7 years ago though!

We've moved midweek both times.

Mother87 · 30/06/2021 20:42

Not sure if this is helpful, but I've just discovered www.shiply.com - you post the job and wait for the quotes to come in. I've had very competitive rates for collecting/delivering junk furniture to me from the other end of the country
