Quooker and hard water

We are getting a quooker but live in a hard water area. The Quooker tap will be the hard water tap for drinking (I don't want a separate tap and I don't like the taste - or lack of taste - of softened water).

When I called Quooker to order, they said not to buy the scale filter optional extra but to instead service it once a year for scale build up as would work out cheaper (£150 service, vs 3-4 replacement scale control cartridges at £80).

I'm now having second thoughts - will I have scummy tea if it's made with hard water? (Use a Brita filter at the moment).

Anyone got a Quooker with hard water who can recommend either way? With scale filter attachment or without?

We have the scale control and it’s been really good, I like not having a film on the water in my drinks

I live in a hard water area, plumber did not recommend a hot water tap as he said it wouldn’t last long, in the end we had a Brita filter tap fitted for drinking water and have switched to an induction hob with rapid boost to get water boiling quickly, faster than boiling a kettle.

We have the scale filter, I can't imagine not having it with hard water (ours is very hard). We were told that it would need changing every 21 months with usage of 3L per day. We must use a lot more as we change it about every 9 months. If we leave it 10 it starts to look scummy. We've never had it serviced though & have had it about5 years.
Having a quooker is not a cheap option however you look at it, but I would never be without it now, we LOVE it.

We have the scale filter and haven’t noticed any scumminess. It does seem to need changing a lot and it’s not cheap to replace (but definitely not 3-4 times a year, maybe twice?).

Softened water is not recommended for drinking for health reasons, btw.

SIL gets a scum on tea made with her Quooker. I’ve no idea if it’s down to hard water or the Quooker itself, but either way it’s not very nice so I pass on tea when I visit her. This seems to anger her - she won’t hear a word against the Quooker!

We have one and live in a very hard water area, use it lots and I change the filter about once a year. No scummy tea as of yet!

We have one, and have had it for 2 years now. Not sure how hard our water is, (SW London), but it's definitely not soft water.

I had to have the tap replaced recently (a fault with the mechanism), and asked the engineer how long he thought it would be before we had to replace the descaling thingy - he checked it and said at least another 18 months.

Thanks - I think Quookers are confusing as there are 2 filters. There is the one in the Quooker which is supposed to last 3-5 years, or there is a separate scale filter with replaceable cartridges. Quooker told me they need replacing 2-4 times a year, but looking at some websites they seem to say once every 12-18 months?

We have the separate unit. When they fitted it they do a test & say how long it will last. Like I said, based on our water they said it would last 21 months if we used 3 litres a day. We obviously use a lot more, or they were wrong.

Cookerhood · 30/06/2021 16:58

There is a hardness table along with how long the filter should last on the quooker website.

Ours is the separate unit as well
