White or coloured tiles in new kitchen.

Can't decide whether to have white tiles and bright coloured walls. Or coloured tiles and whole walls. The units are white. With wood effect work tops. I did like white metro tiles, but have gone off them as Costa have tiled all their toilets in them!

I’m on the verge of finally committing to white tiles with coloured walls on the basis that it’s easier & cheaper to change paint in a couple of years than the tiles. We also have white units & wood effect tops.

DH wanted metro tiles when we first started looking but I think they are everywhere now so already look old hat, I will add that Costa have them in the toilets next time he tries to change my mind again Grin

That's what I'm
Leaning towards, the walls are a really nice shade if green and I love it so could keep that.

I love some of the patterned tiles, but they will look dated in a few years.

I'm never a big fan of while tiles in the kitchen. They look good initially but as time goes by and the dirt builds up they remind me of the bathroom Hmm

Hmm. My bathroom is white tiled and and I like it. The walls are coloured.

So don’t let the dirt build up

What about white zellige tiles? They’re a bit more sophisticated and up to date (but also timeless) than white metro tiles.

ButItRingsAndIRise · 27/06/2021 02:45

I just googled zellige
“ Zellige tile is handmade. That’s the beauty of it. But because of that, you can’t get an even flat surface if you’re laying the tiles right up against each other. Edges may protrude rather than laying flush.

Moreover, the edges of zellige tile are pretty sharp, like paper cut sharp. So, not only can that unevenness make the tiles trickier to wipe down, those edges can catch on fabrics … or your skin.”

Although you can get zellige style

I’m not sure what I think about them. They just look a bit messy tbh.

Hmm. Not sure about the rustic look. Saw these today and like them.

I would go with white, colour on walls is easy to change but tiles aren't and you may not like the colour in couple years.
Long as looked after well dirt won't build up.
Can also go for a different coloured grout if you wanted.

BlueMongoose · 27/06/2021 20:41

I'd go for white, as if you change your colour scheme white goes with almost anything.
Having said that, I'm not a fan of a lot of tiling in the kitchen, especially the ones that look like glazed sides of small bricks. To someone of my age, it can make a place look like a retro public convenience. Grin
We're taking coloured tiles out of this kitchen as part pf renovating the house. They were good of their kind, as people say, but too many of them and too fancy (with 'feature' panels in places), and they would clash like fury with the kitchen units and worktops we plan to install. I'll tile round the sink in white, and have a glass panel, in black probably, behind the cooker, and I think that'll be 'it'. Though I have to admit to being tempted by the idea of having just a few some rather beautiful reproduction Victorian ones I can't even remotely afford. Confused

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 27/06/2021 20:47

we have white walls but red tiles as splashback.

I’ve got Zellige tiles in my bathroom, and they are absolutely beautiful. I wouldn’t want them in a kitchen though, as keeping them clean would be a nightmare.

I wouldn’t put plain white tiles with plain white units though. It could all look a bit clinical.
