Loughborough vs nearby villages

We are going to move to the UK early next year, and are desperately looking for some advices....We are looking for a home with close proximity to Loughborough where my elder son is now studying in secondary. At the same time we need to have good primary schools nearby our new home for my younger son. We are considering both inside Loughborough and neighbouring villages like Coalville, Sheshed, East Leake, Barron Upon Soar, Thringstone, Mountsorrel.... any comments on these areas are truly welcome.

We note that there are quite a lot of property developers like David Wilson Homes, Avant Homes, Jelson Homes, etc...Have you heard anything particularly good or bad about these developers?
Many thanks

Make your mind up @FunnysInLaJardin did you grow up in Coalville/Shepshed or Quorn/Woodhouse?

Bluesheep8 · 19/09/2021 09:39

Coalville is not a village and frankly it’s a dump.

Agreed

I grew up in Woodhouse Eaves and went to school in W/E, Shepshed and Quorn.

Where are you from Daisy?

Mymapuddlington · 19/09/2021 16:01

BTW your remarks about Shepshed, Coalville and other salt of the earth areas

Didn’t realise ‘salt of the earth’ meant biggest shit tip of the earth. Yes I have lived in coalville and couldn’t get out quick enough, it’s a dump.

Daisy1812 · 19/09/2021 22:38

From South London originally but now in Coleorton.
What about you @FunnysInLaJardin, where are you from?

@Mymapuddlington - salt of the earth meaning the people aren’t pretentious and it’s pretty safe. It needs investment and rebranding as bags of potential.

@Bluesheep8 - bit harsh 😝

To be perfectly honest I’d be scared of being stabbed by a druggy if I walked to the co op in coalville. Not pretentious because everyone there lives in the same dump I suppose.

Daisy1812 · 19/09/2021 22:54

@Mymapuddlington - You make it sound like the Bronx , yes a bit “tired” in some parts but non threatening on the whole

Mymapuddlington · 19/09/2021 22:59

I lived there and found it really unfriendly, crime ridden and a shit tip. That’s just my experience of the place.

Daisy1812 · 19/09/2021 23:25

I know what you mean, it’s horrible to feel unsafe in the town you call home. I lived in Loughborough and Quorn for a while. Both really chavvy with huge drug problems. Stunk of piss too

I'm from Leicestershire but now live in Jersey.

Wouldn't go back if you paid me.

Shepshed and Coalville are shit holes and I don’t care who that offends. I know them both very well.
Quorn is lovely, as is Woodhouse Eaves. Newtown Linford is also nice.

uehfuhwigjierghiaoefg · 20/09/2021 14:19

I can't comment on surrounding villages as usually stick to Loughborough and nearby cities.

The 'nice' bit of Loughborough is on what they call the 'forest side' where there are bigger houses and a couple of outstanding primaries - Holywell, Outwoods Edge. Mountfields Lodge is also meant to be very good.

We are in a terrace closer to the town centre which would be less desirable to some but I think its great being easy walking distance to almost everything you need including the station. There are at least a couple of decent primaries in the town centre - the COE school and Rendell. Also a Catholic primary St Mary's is meant to be ok.

Loughborough is not the most beautiful town, but personally I like the friendly vibe. Also looking forward to when the kids can walk everywhere themselves.

I live between Notyingham and L'boro and personally prefer L'boro for shopping and ease. It's a perfect size, easy to park and I love it when the students are back as it's much livelier. Our experience of the endowed schools was all good.

Lots of great places mentioned here. I would pick East Leake or Barrow for a good mix of people and ages, sense of community, facilities and schools but I hear good things about all the other places too including Coalville and Shepshed. Whetever you are you have access to lovely countryside. Good luck!

AllTheSmallThings1 · 05/02/2024 22:00

If having to choose between Mountsorrel and Barrow, which would be better for a single person? Mountsorrel seems a bit cheaper property wise but does that mean it's not as nice?
Looking for a safe place to live where you don't have to worry about walking alone in the dark and small enough that people say morning to you when you walk the dog!
I know villages north of Loughborough fairly well (Wymeswold, Costock, East Leake, Gotham etc) and lived in Loughborough itself but not had much experience in Mountsorrel, been to Barrow a few times for walks and thought it felt like a nice place. Anything else I need to think of? Thanks!

FunnysInLaJardin · 06/02/2024 10:24

Are you moving to Barrow or Mountsorrel @AllTheSmallThings1 ?

We lived in Barrow many years ago and it was nicer than Mountsorrel. However since the A6 was diverted, that might have changed

AllTheSmallThings1 · 06/02/2024 10:33

Just looking at the options at this stage so haven't fully decided and was hoping for advice from the locals!
