Arts & Crafts House - Replacement Windows

Was wondering if anyone on here had successfully replaced the windows on an arts and crafts style house? Still have the original single glazed windows which I think are beautiful but they are old, sadly quite rotten in places and drafty. Definitely need replacing in the not too distant future so would like something that is double glazed but I don't really want to lose the character and I love the black original handles. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good compromise? Thank you.

It looks like they are timber so just get timber double glazed windows made up and re use the handles

There is great secondary glazing available which folds down to clean between it and the original windows and has bars in all same places as original window. Your originals look lovely.

Your windows are beautiful.
We had the same dilemma with an 1850 cottage.
We had a recommended joiner make the new double glazed sash windows. They are beautiful. Someone new to the village remarked on them the other day. It is possible if you can find someone that is used to doing it. Are you England or Scotland or Wales?

Ours are similar - you can reuse the handles if you get new windows made.

A good joiner may be able to save them - we had repairs done that are really good on windows we thought were beyone repiar. And then you could put secondary glazing up.

We can't have secondary glazing as windows open inwards.

So we had a quote to replace, with coloured glass to match the originals. For 3 big bays and 2 big windows - wide but narrow - it was £17,000 in hardwood double glazed.

We are thinking about it.....

We are in the same position. Big, beautiful old windows that are single-glazed, cold and drafty. Ours are Crittal in wood frames. If yours are all wood then a good joiner can make a bespoke double glazed version pretty easily - but it won't be cheap.

Thank you so much for your replies. I hadn't realised that a joiner might be just what we are looking for. I realise it will be an expensive project but we aren't planning on moving and I want to come home and walk up to my house and it continues to make me smile, as opposed to thinking every day "I really hate those new darn windows". Definitely worth saving and investing in!
