What was your compromise?

They say there’s always a compromise with houses. What was yours? In my first house there was no compromise, my current house has a tiny garden and kitchen, and it’s looking like I’m going to have to accept a long list of compromises if I’m ever going to find house #3... just interested to hear what others were willing to overlook! Thanks in advance!

We're just about to move.

My compromised has been location. Which I'm gutted about but it's not our "forever" home so I'll get over it

Tricky parking, poor state of repair, smallish garden. But the location is great and there is plenty of space.

PiuVinoPerFavore · 26/06/2021 15:38

Lack of kerb appeal. Our house is ugly but great on the inside and in a brilliant location. I wish it was pretty but I am mostly on the inside so that takes priority.

First house didn't really have any for its price.

Current house our main compromise was that it's only just a 2 car drive, back to back, not side to side. Otherwise it has the potential to be whatever we want.

@TentTalk

Ha ha

We talk about compromises - I have never had a drive

All relative I guess

Compromises were buying close to a train line and a smallish garden. But we got an amazing, spacious house in a lovely area that we wouldn't have been able to afford had it not had those compromises. When we come to sell, which shouldn't be for many years, I expect our buyer pool will be smaller because of these aspects but we will manage it.

No bathroom windows.

We are about to complete on our third house tomorrow - our compromise is the garden. We have just come from a 2 up 2 down with a downstairs bathroom but a lovely long beautiful garden that we have loved over the last five years....

The new house is a semi detached with 4 beds and a big kitchen/dining area. I know we desperately need the indoor space over a big garden so it made sense.

Roselilly36 · 27/06/2021 10:10

Our compromise was not having a garage, but we do have a large private drive. Things I wouldn’t compromise on was being a bungalow (due to disability) detached, location, two bathrooms, all bedrooms had to be doubles, very private garden.

PeachandBee · 27/06/2021 20:15

We compromised on location to tick all the other boxes. Not a worse location, just one we didn't really know. The gamble paid off because we've struck gold in a lovely quiet area with catchment to 3 good secondary schools and neighbours that bring me bottles of wine! And it was 100k cheaper than the area we initially wanted.

MadMadMadamMim · 27/06/2021 20:17

We're on a main road. Apart from that, everything about the house is great.

But when, in years to come, we move I won't be on a main road again. That will probably be my priority. It bothers me more than I thought it would. And I thought it would bother me quite a bit.

AlfonsoTheMango · 27/06/2021 20:37

My house is on a busy road but the windows are double-glazed and traffic noise doesn't bother me. In exchange I got: large windows, high ceilings, fireplaces, built-in bookcases, a garden, everything I need on a daily basis within walking distance and good public transport links.

dudsville · 27/06/2021 20:43

We kept looking until we found a house that ticked all the boxes. We were reasonable, not asking for unicorns for 10k. BUT we did move some distance for this and you may well call that a compromise. It turns out however that we're thrilled with the relocation and wish we'd done it sooner. We made a hierarchical list by priority and literally assessed each house on a mini spreadsheet.
