Unsealed bathroom!

yonderfive · 23/06/2021 21:42

There's no seal between the tiles and the walls in my bathroom, and just open floorboards under the bath, also the sink and toilet are not sealed at the back. We've had two mice suddenly appear on the landing and can only assume they've come from the bathroom.
Can anyone advise me what to do?
Or who would fix this for me? Is sealing even the term? I'd like it sorted ASAP as newborn in the house and quite paranoid! Thanks Smile

Just seal it? Get some sealant and look on YouTube for how to apply.

FindingMeno · 24/06/2021 07:31

If you don't feel confident to do it yourself perhaps friend or family might help.
The mice aren't necessarily anything to do with it.
Don't leave any food about, keep the kitchen free of crumbs, and put all dry food like cereal and pasta in containers.
If you are a tenant, then obviously approach the landlord about the sealant and mice.

Cissyandflora · 24/06/2021 08:10

I’m not sure what you mean about no sealing. Do you mean you can see gaps? You can squirt some filler if so. There are lots of videos you can watch on YouTube. If you mean something else then come back to me and I can advise.

it is quite common for plumbers to leave floor gaps under the bath, where they will be unseen behind the bath panel. you can block draughts by putting down ply, and if it is an unheated area below, you can add insulation between the joists.

if the plumbers are sufficiently uncaring, they also leave other gaps where they hack the floors and walls about for pipes to go through.

Your mice are an entirely different matter.

is this bathroom on the ground floor?

where do you think the mice are coming from?

ILoveShula · 24/06/2021 12:22

Sealing the bath is not difficult, but make sure you fill the bath with water before you do it.

nutellamagnet · 24/06/2021 20:42

Get a mastic man in if you're not confident. I paid £50 for my bathroom to be sealed including sealant. It's been done professionally and I'm very happy.

ILoveShula · 25/06/2021 19:49

@nutellamagnet, did you mean mastic person?

I prefer "Gunge Girl".

ILoveShula · 25/06/2021 20:49

I just wondered if sealing my bath would be easier if I had a penis.

yonderfive · 25/06/2021 23:23

Lol. 'Mastic person'
😂

'Did you mean this'
is such a stuck up virtue signalling arrogant thing to say to someone. Get over yourself.

Afterall*

Hallyup6 · 26/06/2021 11:03

Only Mumsnet could turn this into a feminism debate 🙄

But yeah, either get some sealant or someone to do it for you.

Fwiw, we had mice upstairs and assumed they were getting in through the bathroom. Turns out they were actually coming up the stairs via the kitchen. I'd put some cameras out to check.

LawnFever · 26/06/2021 15:31

Mice is nothing to do with the gaps in the bathroom, get some traps or poison down to get rid. Even if you seal the bathroom if there’s mice there will still be there…

oohmyback · 26/06/2021 15:46

We had mice in our old house. No idea where they came in. We got a cat lol
@nutellamagnet, did you mean mastic person?
No, I meant mastic man. Mine's called Andy.

FTEngineerM · 26/06/2021 21:15

Are they all men @nutellamagnet?

nutellamagnet · 26/06/2021 21:24

@FTEngineerM

Are they all men *@nutellamagnet*?

Andy is.

Honestly, I'm not sure what you think you're achieving here. I see you posting all the time and sometimes you add value. Other times...

Have a great evening.

FTEngineerM · 26/06/2021 21:53

That’s kind.
I’m pleased that it doesn’t frustrate you at all when someone refers to whole swaths of job roles as men, it does me. I was just agreeing with the PP Smile

You too.

Oh my god who cares.

ILoveShula · 28/06/2021 13:16

I care.

I work in a male-dominated industry that doesn't need to be male-dominated. Whenever a new engineer is being recruited, people talk about what he'll be doing, what team he'll be on, what skills he will have etc. They have already subconsciously decided that it is a man's job.

If you mention discussing something with your doctor/dentist/solicitor/accountant, people will ask 'What did he say?' yet all these are jobs that women do.

Cleaners/nurses/secretaries/teachers/nannies? It would be 'what did she say?'

Somanysocks · 28/06/2021 15:41

@ILoveShula I get what you're saying, I'm a female decorator, I'm always inwardly rolling my eyes at the comments and constantly biting my tongue. It's tiresome.

Somanysocks · 28/06/2021 15:42

And I'm cracking at the silicone gun.

FTEngineerM · 28/06/2021 16:20

Lots of people @yonderfive Smile
I’m ok with you not caring, you aren’t alone.
