Orangey or a conservatory or a extension

Like most people in COVID times we have found our house is too small.
We have currently SSTC BUT we can’t find a house to move to. So if we stay in our current house we want to add to the back of the house. But really unsure what to go for. We would use the extra space as a dinning area.
What would work better? We’re in an an early 00’s (red brick) townhouse.

I do like a well done orangery!

Viviennemary · 23/06/2021 21:04

Orangeries especially for kitchen dining room type extensions seem to be very popular. There are some great photos on google images. I'd go for orangery.

Conservatories are just crap. Nobody I know had been happy with theirs, too hot / cold. An orangery looks good on a mansion. An extension is the best way to add value if you plan on selling at some point and will feel like part of the original house.

I love the extension I did in my last house. It had proper brick walls, with two sets of French doors, two windows and a glass roof. It was light and bright all year. I think it was classed as an orangery. The difference is percentage of glazing I think.

Are you planning to grow citrus fruits? Want to preserve tender plants over winter?

Or do you actually want it to be a usable room?

IrishCream123 · 23/06/2021 22:53

We want a usable room.

I think you need to consider which was your house faces, where you are and how warm it gets. The orangeries / glass roof type rooms look good but if you're South Facing the room will be too hot to use for large parts of the year.

Then it's a standard extension.
