Moving house - state to leave current property?

We're mid-packing and I've just realised some of our skirting boards have been cut to fit around furniture which we will be taking (shoe cabinet, bookcases) and I'm pretty sure I painted around the larger bookcase so there's a good chance it'll be a different colour paint in behind. Obviously we're going to give everywhere a really good clean before we move but will we be expected to fit new skirting and paint the walls too? For reference it's an ex-council house, 70 years old, sold for £130k.

Just leave it clean and empty.

No, though your new owners won't be happy. Your obligation is to leave it empty and 'swept clean', as I believe the phrase used to be.
I left all my pucture hooks, some of which were heavy duty screws, which will be annoying to remove and fill.
If it was something like you were leaving the washing machine and it broke, I think you should have it fixed, but gaps in skirting boards are just one of those things, and not too much to repair.

No just leave it clean and empty. Our old kitchen looked awful when we moved out as the buyers said they wanted us to take away our American fridge freezer (we offered to leave it behind at no cost and it was only about 3 years old) and there was a mess left behind when we removed it due to the special plumbing required. I bet they weren't happy when they saw the state of the kitchen with it gone but what can you do?

Clean and empty is all you need to do!

PurBal · 23/06/2021 07:44

Just empty and preferably clean. We found a room with missing carpet where a wardrobe used to be and most rooms with different coloured paint behind the previous owners taller furniture.

Thanks all - one less thing for the to-do list! We'll definitely leave it clean and empty and we know they want to decorate and knock down walls etc so we'll just leave the walls and the skirting as they are.

Clean & empty is fine. I just fitted new skirting boards in my living room : £100 materials, £100 labour

The wall painting they can do themselves

Your buyers will probably be irritated but if that is the worst they find they are getting off lightly - I think it’s the norm to find various botches in a new house!

As the others have said clean and empty
We hoovered and cleaned behind the removers so as fridges and larger items went we could sort those areas
Check sheds and lifts so things aren’t accidentally left

Btw, I cleaned my old place perfectly in days leading up to move. when movers came on the day & took away furniture loads of dust emerged from under … maybe save the cleaning til after everything is out

Clean, empty that's all, if you have paint left from painting leave the pots for touching up. We had bits in different colour behind things when we moved in
