House backing onto Allotments, Concerned about potential rodent problems

Booked to view a house, however after a Google street search I’ve discovered it backs onto allotments.
While there are benefits to this, I am concerned that allotments may attract pests, and I wouldn’t want them in my garden.
Should mention I’m quite phobic about the furry buggers!
Does anyone have experience of living near allotments? Am I just being paranoid? It is a lovely house.

I can't see why it would be any different to backing on to another garden with respect to rodents.

We have allotments behind us, although separated by a railway line. The main problem we have is that allotment owners seem happy to have bonfires throughout the weekend.

I'd be more worried about the council selling off the allotment land for housing than rats. The rats won't be bothered by the compost on the allotments - they'll be far more interested in food waste than green waste.

Why would an allotment be any different to any other garden and attract rats?

LavendulaAngustifolia · 22/06/2021 19:40

Bonfires are more of a pest than rats.

Overdon · 22/06/2021 20:52

Thanks for the heads up about bonfires, that never occurred to me.

I thought rats/mice were attracted to compost, seeds etc which made me think allotments would be a problem area.

Rats are everywhere. You don’t get more of them on allotments than any other garden. Commercial bins are generally worse places for rodents.

We have a garden rat, but none that I've seen at our allotment...

OlivePenderghast · 22/06/2021 22:00

My neighbour has a rat phobia and has rat traps along all her fences to prevent any getting into her garden!

I don’t think it works and probably just makes her more aware of any rats around.

HandlebarLadyTash · 22/06/2021 22:16

We have allotments, have only seen 1 rat running across the road. Theres loads of cats (that shit all over the garden) that keep an eye out, actually cat shit is more annoying than mr ratty

umbel · 22/06/2021 22:26

We do have rats at our allotments, but we keep chickens there and they are attracted by the food. If it weren’t for the chickens, I don’t think there would be more rats than anywhere else - as someone has said, they are everywhere.

EvilEdna1 · 22/06/2021 22:34

I grew up in a home next to allotments. The only pests were the ones our cat caught and brought in. Main downsides were bonfires and manure. It was beautifully quiet in the evenings/night.

parietal · 22/06/2021 22:35

allotments probably also have foxes, who will keep the rats at bay. Better than being near a take-away or anywhere that food-waste accumulates.

ShirazSavedMySanity · 22/06/2021 22:38

Our house backs onto an allotment, in 16 years we’ve never seen a rat.

However, the tenant died four years ago and the council have still not given the plot to anyone. It is entirely overgrown, the greenhouse is an eyesore and despite speaking to the council on numerous occasions to attempt to get it sorted, nothing has been done. Could just be our council though, they’re not known for being on the ball.

UCOinSteveArnottsPants · 22/06/2021 22:40

The bonfires will be the problem not rats. We live close to allotments and it’s a real pain pretty much all year round.

Overdon · 23/06/2021 16:56

Thanks for all your replies, I think my phobia is getting out of hand sometimes!
Will try and view with an open mind.

I lived opposite allotments and never had any rodent issues. Biggest problem was inconsiderate parking from some allotment owners blocking me in (it was a cul de sac)!

Reddear · 29/04/2023 08:44

Rats and allotments go hand in hand. You will het loads if they keep chickens . They rats are attracted to the seeds, feeds and compost heaps.
