I don't think you can generalise that much as you'll see from the responses. On the south coast, I don't like Brighton because there's too much anti-social behaviour on weekends but other people love it as it has loads going on culturally. I like Southsea as the common is huge and there's a good community vibe but there's not much going on if you're into watersports. Weymouth is brilliant for watersports but culturally more limited IME etc etc.

How coastal? Formby has a lovely beach/coast but no one lives on the seafront (you have to walk to it). Mostly middle class area, good links to Southport/Liverpool. A bit dull.

Brighton used to be nice, now it’s downtrodden and a bit scummy. I’ll always love it because of my childhood visits.
