Malicious behaviour of vendor - toilet seat removed, fridge and oven shelves taken out😡

Name changed to post this for obvious reasons!

What do you think of this - following signing of contracts one of the vendors removed the toilet seat, the oven shelves, the fridge shelves, nailed the windows shut and poured neat weed killer on patches of the lawn!

Basically it was the sale of house owned by several siblings - the majority were in favour of the sale but two opposed and did everything they could to delay and disrupt the sale including putting in fake bids during the marketing and sale. Eventually a sale was agreed and contracts signed and the buyer discovered the above!

Have you just bought this house? I can appreciate this is annoying but tbh small & easily fixable. I think it’s not uncommon to find something damaged/broken when you move to a new house (usually not intentional though)

Hope you don’t find anything worse.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 20/06/2021 23:09

Its really petty, what did the estate agent say?

frazzledasarock · 20/06/2021 23:09

Nailed windows shut? Are they those upvc double glazed windows? The units could be damaged if so.

I’d speak to my solicitor if the windows are damaged. Other things can be rectified relatively cheaply.

Altho I’d also speak to a gardener about the weed killer and if it causes long term damage I’d be following that up too.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 20/06/2021 23:10

This is definitely one for your solicitor to handle

LizzieMacQueen · 20/06/2021 23:12

Look for dead fish behind the radiators.

I wonder if the weedkiller spells something out eg 'piss off'.

I'm really not adding to your thread am I.

Agree. It's not acceptable
IAmAWomanNotACis · 20/06/2021 23:24

I'm so sorry Flowers I hope you have some recourse.

DespairingHomeowner · 20/06/2021 23:25

I missed windows nailed shut - that’s going too far

HollowTalk · 20/06/2021 23:26

If you look at the position the toilet's handle is in, you might find they've damaged something in the cistern, OP.

I'd be straight to a solicitor.

HollowTalk · 20/06/2021 23:27

Was this a house left to them by their parents? If so, shame on them.

LizB62A · 20/06/2021 23:31

I always change the toilet seats the day I move in so that wouldn't bother me
A lot of the rest actually sounds like criminal damage though so the solicitor should deal with it

IvorHughJarrs · 20/06/2021 23:31

Agree with informing solicitor and taking advice in case anything surfaces which causes a longer term or more expensive problem.
We once moved house and the vendor had removed all sorts of things including the hanging rails in the built-in wardrobes and all light bulbs except those on the stairs but, luckily nothing major long-term

StarlingsDarlings · 20/06/2021 23:31

Petty and mean but in reality you’d be better off making good and forgetting about it.

Years ago we moved house and the previous owner covered up a smashed hob with a cooking pan during viewings, left behind a faulty freezer, and no keys to the garage. Foolishly we did still forward on the post for her.

nimbuscloud · 20/06/2021 23:32

Yes to your solicitor.
Presumably you have changed the locks?

EveryoneIsThere · 20/06/2021 23:35

Is there any chance that it’s not malicious damage. Was the house empty? The windows being nailed shut could be for security?? Maybe??? The loo seat and fridge shelves could have been damaged or really dirty? Maybe someone just forgot to return them? I actually don’t think that looks like weed killer on the lawn. It’s too regular and looks like something was left on the lawn and the grass died under it.
If it was malicious wouldn’t they have done other more obvious stuff like ruined carpets or decorations or something?

Was the rest of the house left clean and tidy?
I can understand why the arguing siblings tried to stop the sale by putting in fake bids etc but I don’t think it would automatically follow that they would then want to sabotage the house.

Tinty · 20/06/2021 23:38

I moved into a house which had been repossessed. The toilets were stuffed with burnt paper. The kitchen doors were all hanging off. The light fittings had been removed and loads of water pipes had been disconnected in the bathrooms and loft. We reconnected all the pipes (plumber did it), turned on the water and discovered water pouring down the wall from the airing cupboard into the lounge. Hmm. Some people are just unpleasant.

Houseofvelour · 21/06/2021 00:06

They're complete gobshites!
Hope you're ok op xx

NoddyMcdoddy · 21/06/2021 00:07

The only thing that would bother me would be the windows nailed shut as they may be damaged.

The toilet seat, grass and fridge shelves wouldn’t bother me at all.

Disgustingbehaviour · 21/06/2021 00:18

I’m not actually the buyer but I know them!
It hadn’t occurred to me that the windows might be damaged by what they did to them.

Why do I have a feeling it was the OP's siblings that did this.......

Gingernaut · 21/06/2021 00:39

Yeah, nah, that's criminal damage and theft.

If these things were covered by the sale, then they've stolen from the new owner.

This is something to take up with the solicitor - especially the windows.

If the nails have simply gone through the frames, that's bad enough, but if it's double glazing, then they've busted the frames and potentially damaged the glazing units - that could cost thousands to replace.
