Hidden door to utility room - Your Home Made Perfect

I am slightly obsessed with 'Your Home Made Perfect' and hidden doors to utility rooms/pantries seem to be this season's bench seating. For anyone who's not seen it, I mean doors that look like kitchen cabinets but actually lead to a utility room or pantry (like a disappointing Narnia!). Has anyone had this done in real life? I love the look but not sure how practical it is in reality. Are cabinet doors too flimsy to have as real doors? I'm also assuming they won't be as good at blocking out the sounds of the washing machine. Is it a case of style over substance or design genius?

I can't help Marmalade but I share your obsession and would also like to know the answer Smile

We had this in a London flat. ( not there anymore ) The furniture doors were mounted on a pivot door so it looked like a 90cm cupboard when closed. It was heavy enough to block the washing machine sounds from beyond.

We've got a narnia door in wall of wardrobes to our ensuite in house we very recently moved into. Love it! The novelty hasn't worn off

I have a perfectly ordinary door to our utility room but from dh's perspective it seems to be a hidden door.
Is that what you mean?

Decent washing machines are pretty quiet now anyway especially if you have them on a sound deadening mat.

The door would have to be beefed up a bit as chipboard/MDF would warp at sizes big enough to walk through with washing in hand. Maybe back it with some decent plywood and use proper hinges rather than cupboard hinges.
But i would mainly say remember this is for TV novelty factor rather than practicality. If you get a really good and sensibly architect they won't do anything that would look good on TV but it would be practical and value for money.
Having said all that I'd love some of the fun features they put in!

I forgot to mention you can get some clamps that you router into the back of standard 22mm cupboard doors to make them more resistant to warping at larger sizes. This would save as much beefing up so you'd end up with a lighter door that might look better from the other side.
