Shower Boards - anyone install them?

A friend suggested rather than tiling around the bath I should consider shower boards. I am very tempted. I had a few questions and am hoping someone on here might know the answers.

If you installed shower boards:

  • can you cut them to shape around existing things e g. Window
  • can I install them if my walls aren't straight
  • what type of trade person do I need to hire, a tiler or a carpenter
  • are you happy with the boards

Thanks all

Yes, they can be cut to fit.
Your walls don’t have to be perfectly straight but obviously there are limits.
A carpenter did ours.
I love them! I’ve had them for 3 years and they look like new. Cleaning is much easier too - just a quick wipe and no grout to contend with.

Yes, the cleaning is the big attraction Grin

We are looking at these for our new shower room. Any brands people would recommend?

Mine are Mermaid. Got them from a local independent builders merchants (that I happen to work at!). The supplier will be able to advise on what you need if you go in with measurements. They will also supply the edging and adhesive etc.

Google Mermaid panels and you’ll find them

In a previous house, we did ours ourselves. If you have / can hire or borrow a jigsaw it’s easy to cut them to size and shape and they’re simple to stick to the wall with adhesive. The walls do need to be reasonably level otherwise the adhesive doesn’t grab properly, but there is some leeway.

I have to say, I didn’t like them and wouldn’t put them into a bathroom I had to live with (we were selling unexpectedly and wanted a cheap and easy replacement for some truly awful cracked and mouldy old tiles in a shower room we always meant to renovate properly had we stayed long term.) It ended up looking a bit like a leisure centre shower area.
