Concerns about paying a roofer

Hi everyone,

I hope someone can advise on how I should deal with an issue. I got a price from a roofer a few weeks ago to repair some specific areas of my roof (I had photos taken showing the areas that needed attention). I agreed to the price that he gave me and work was carried out yesterday.

I have had a phone call from the roofer saying that other areas of the roof needed fixing and these were done in addition to the specific areas we agreed before the job started. He is now saying that he is charging me for the extra repairs carried out. Does anyone have any ideas on my legal position and how I should respond?

Thank you in advance.

Do you have any written proof of his quote? Or at the very least the agreement as to which areas you wanted repaired?
Simple answer is if he did more work than you asked for he’s very foolish and not entitled to be paid for it. I work with lots of contractors and use roofers frequently. In some cases it would be acceptable for them to do other emergency work when up there but I would always get a call to check first.
You have no obligation to pay here.

Hi thank you for the reply. Yes, I do have written evidence of his price in a text message.

Was the work he did desperately needed (as in an active leak or health and safety issue) that you would have been required to fix soon? If so and you were feeling generous you could pay. But otherwise just say “I did not agree to any additional work, and was not aware you had done it without my permission. I am only in a position to pay the costs initially agreed in your quote for the requested work. Please let me know if a bank transfer or cheque is more convenient for you.”
