Nobody can really help you from that op. You need to post photos of the room.

I would however recommend you go onto Houzz abs create an idea book for the room. Go into photos and then pin every photo you like. Once you’ve been through a few, look back through your book and you’ll see themes emerging eg dark wood floors, white curtains, floral wallpapers etc. This helps you narrow down your preferences. You can then go from there.

Even better than paying for a bunch of magazines - subscribe for a free trial (1 month free) for a online multi-magazine subscription i.e. Readly or similar.
They'll have a huge selection of house / decor / interior design magazines, and also the back issues.

(Just remember to cancel the subscription as you'll get charged after 30 days!)

Or just order the magazine online from your local library for free

Will your landlord want you putting up textured wallpaper? Seems a lot to spend on a home that’s you don’t own - I’d spend it on things you can take like art work of some sort and paint.

I agree that a landlord is not likely to be happy about you putting up textured wallpaper (or possibly any wallpaper at all).

[quote TheresALight]John Lewis has a free home design service. They will recommend items from JL but no obligation to but, so you can use it for inspiration and advice on what type of things go well together.

I was going to suggest this too. I haven't used it but it looks brilliant

A nice mirror above the chimney breast, a good tidy, a nice rug, side tables with items grouped in 3's and some lamps for lighting?

BasiliskStare · 18/06/2021 21:25

If rented I would go for freestanding shelves / cupboards either side of the chimney breast so you can take them with you ( if you want something there. Otherwise ( unless with agreement of landlord ) I would go with emulsion paint rather than wall paper as so easy & pretty cheap to put back to how you inherited it . Personally ( and it is only one opinion if you want a colour on that fireplace wall I would do both the chimney breast and the alcoves rather than just chimney breast.

Good luck - sounds exciting

Don't buy magazines that might not have the layout inspiration you need.
Get yourself on Houzz (app or website) you can search the photos and filter by room, then style, etc.
They'll also be tagged to let you know where you can get the items, though it's generally cheaper to look for copies yourself.
You'll get loads of ideas to suit you, and not need an interior designer.
A quick 20 second search brought me this photo is is a similar layout to your room.

If it were me:

Colour scheme options:

  • muted: light grey on walls with a duck egg blue on either side of chimney breast. Add some duck egg blue and teal cushions.
  • bold: shade of coral/mustard yellow on either side of chimney (bright colours make walls come forward so you want those to be brighter than chimney breast me thinks) white on walls, then add teal, navy and coral/mustard yellow cushions.
  • to add texture to room maybe do some mirrors, shelving or photo/gallery wall on chimney breast to draw eye up in woods or silver?

Other colours that go with teal is complimentary orange or chartreuse green. X
