Can anyone recommend a WiFi booster?

BT assured me that their medium Fibre package would be OK for my house, a very small 3 bed terrace.

It isn't - the WiFi doesn't work in the tiny bedroom upstairs that I use as an office.

Would a booster work? And if so what do I need to look for, and can anyone recommend one?

I can't have another conversation with BT, they have already done y head in one way and another.

Thank you!

We have exactly the same problem. Watching with interest 👀

We got a ‘mesh’ thingy from Virgin. God knows what it is but it worked. I can now access WiFi in my garden, which I am currently doing 🤣

I'm with BT. We have a large stone house and the wifi couldn't reach most of the rooms. BT gave us 3 "discs". They are excellent and we have super fast wifi in all corners of the house now. I think the package included them or you could pay £5 a month extra. You can also plug ethernet into the discs.

Can you plug in an ethernet cable to your laptop? If so we have tp link adapter thing which helps a lot. here

NotMeNoNo · 09/06/2021 11:52

An ethernet cable connection between the router and your PC is the best solution, might involve some cable clipping up the stairs. We get about 10% of our connection speed over WIFI.

We bought a set of Orbi mesh boosters (not quite sure this is how to describe them.....!) and they've really helped with our house as the cable is at the end of a room with very thick walls.

JustPootlingAlong · 09/06/2021 11:54

Yes a booster should work. You can pick them up on Argos for about £20 each. I have the TP link booster in my cottage with very thick stone walls and it works great. Carries the wifi throughout the entire house.

Reallybadidea · 09/06/2021 11:57

We have a devolo WiFi extender thing. It's a set of 2 plugs, one which plugs in near the main modem and then you can plug the other in wherever you want it. I think it relays the signal through the mains wiring, so can extend a really long way. Ours is rigged up to our garden office which is about 40 metres from the modem and it works brilliantly. It also means we don't need to get new extenders if I change Internet provider.

Reallybadidea · 09/06/2021 11:59

I meant to say, you don't need to plug your device into the plug, it just works as another WiFi network.

I have this too and it has worked really well for me

As mentioned above we have the BT discs (mesh) which works alongside the Sky broadband. It’s been so so so so good since we got it. The discs cost something like £150, we bought outright. Well worth it for finally sorting the problem.
Wi-Fi upstairs was horrible before and we used 3 different “extenders” which were so unreliable.

UpTheJunktion · 09/06/2021 13:05

I will try the Argos cheap extender before any of the more expensive / demanding options (wiring). It will not get heavy use, no one gaming etc in the house. Just want my printer and laptop to work for documents.

We've got the Amazon mesh.
Does sound overkill for just the office, £150.

CasperGutman · 09/06/2021 13:48

Mesh WiFi is better than a range extender. The mesh ones create a single WiFi network from all the base units, so your phone/tablet/computer switches seamlessly between them. Other solutions tend to create a second network so you move around the house and find you are still connected to the barely-detectable (and therefore slow) network in another part of the house and not to the one you're standing next to!

Powerline adapters will probably work better than an extender.

honeylulu · 09/06/2021 15:03

This is really useful. I have been using Netgear boosters to get the Wifi to all parts of the house (big old thick walled Victorian house and on a hill) but they are abut £35 each and only seem to last about 2 years. next time I need one I am going to invest in one of these mesh things that I had never heard of before!

SpeakingFranglais · 09/06/2021 16:02

The medium fibre package is related to broadband bandwidth and not wifi range. Lots of things impact wifi, as mentioned by PP including thick walls, high ceilings, electrical interference etc

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 09/06/2021 18:48

Orbi mesh but quite pricey so Ethernet cable directly into the router worth trying first.

raeroe · 09/06/2021 18:52

I just changed to plusnet from broadband and it has a further reach and I live in a flat!

chukwe · 09/06/2021 21:38

If you can get a cable installer and have this eu.store.ui.com/products/unifi-ap-6-lite installed on your ceiling. It'll give full coverage to your house
