Scaffolding and decking question.

Old terraced house.
Needs painting outside and some attention to brickwork - repointing etc.
All stuff that will need scaffolding IMHO.
Problem is : decking in place across the whole of the side return and back of the house.

Can scaffolding be erected on top of decking or will sections of deck have to be lifted?

I think I probably know the answer but just asking in case someone can advise otherwise.

It depends on the decking but generally the answer would be no. Unless the scaffolder can be sure of the integrity of the deck, they would want to put it on solid ground.

The alternative is to use a cherry picker/MEWP which could sit beyond the deck and give access.

I had builders who managed to erect scaffolding around and over a glass roof to access brickwork. Ask the scaffolders - I'm sure they've overcome more tricky situations.

Thanks both.

I did wonder about a cherry picker but there would a rear access issue getting it round the back and into the garden.

The stretch required, at the widest part, would be approximately 54 feet, or thereabouts (long, thin house).

I was hoping someone would come along and say 'my DP is a scaffolder and he says you can get special scaffolding, which weighs nothing and can be put on decking' or, 'we used a company that had the painters abseil down from a helicopter to paint the house'.

Back to the drawing board.
