I consider moving to Chelmsford from London, and travel from Chelmsford to London every morning, and back after work.

How crowded is the train from Chelmsford Railway station to London Liverpool station in the morning? Any tricks to get around that if it is crowded?

It depends what time you are travelling ..... it can be very busy and standing room only on some , but there are also a few trains that start at Chelmsford so you can get a seat on them for sure ......

What about from 8am - 9am weekdays? Is it busy during those times?
How do I check trains that start at Chelmsford so seats are available?
Thanks in advance.

i think that's in the middle of the peak hours,
so yes it's going to be very busy.
how could you think not.
or am i missing something.

At the moment they seem to be running a reduced timetable and only putting on 8 carriage trains, there has been the odd 12 carriage but you can't count on it. The 8 carriage trains (at the moment) seem to be at 3/4 full, so some seats available. However, they seem to be getting busier with each week that passes and people are going back in. I always manage to find a seat, but I'm not choosy about where (middle seats, ask people to move bags etc).

What you have to consider with Chelmsford is that they are building huge housing developments out at Beaulieu, so potentially 1000s more commuters. They have promised to build a second station at Beaulieu to cater for this...but it is yet to materialise for the last 30 years and keeps getting delayed. Hmm

I think Chelmsford is the busiest 2 platform station in the country...which makes sense when you think of the size of the city and the fact the Victorian station is squished into the city centre on a viaduct type set-up (no room to expand).

I haven’t commuted into London on the train since December 2019 although my office is still in London but I’m wfh full time. Chelmsford is very busy at peak time and even more so when there are issues with the trains. But as a pp said, there are some trains that start at Chelmsford. If it’s really important to you, you could call the station and ask for the train timetable and specifically which trains begin at Chelmsford. Then you should have no problem with getting a seat. Trains are also every 10-15 minutes so if you can’t get a seat on one you could always wait for the next one and you’ll be at the front of the platform.
