Renegotiating plumbing work price when scope of work has changed

Hi! Writing to ask for an advice from wise mumsnet readers. We are doing plumbing works in our new house. Received several quotes, some with breakdown and some not, chose the plumber based on reviews and our gut and he is currently working. The scope of work is quite large: we are replacing old system boiler with combi one, replacing some radiators, installing new ones, removing old cylinder, etc. One of the items every plumber said we have to do and estimated as a big work is replacing the gas pipe because existing pipe is narrow. It was hard to say from what point it becomes narrow, but the plumber we decided to go for said that he will replace it from the meter if needed.

Now it turned out that pipe is fine almost the entire length and needs changing just from the boiler down to the floor level. So no need to bring the new one from the meter which is 1.5 floors down, and is far from boiler position and this would mean lifting up one more floor.
So my question is - would you expect the price of work to be adjusted in that case? His quote was not itemized so it's hard to say how much was that specific item, but he was going to do this job, spend his time, buy materials and now it's not on to-do list anymore.
It totally makes sense to me - less work should mean less price, but would be interesting to hear other opinions. Thanks!

I would politely ask him if this change meant that the cost would come in cheaper. He might be fully expecting to charge you less, he might not have thought about it, or alternatively he might've thought that either it was a tiny proportion of cost, or he had agreed that bit as goodwill to get the business and then may not have any intention of reducing.
