Stay in nice, affordable house in city or move to expensive semi-rural tiny house?

Myself and DH have no children, now mid-40s so that won’t change. Both work FT and have a lovely house and garden on edge of big city (so city issues, but our little bit of it is green and mostly ok). Would you stay near friends, easy commute etc and have spare money to do stuff or would you move to a much smaller house in more expensive semi-rural area, longer commute but pretty, desirable area about 30mins out of city (with a longer mortgage)?

Stay put- why would you move?! You aren’t trying to gain more space for kids or a better catchment area for a school.
My only advice would be put excess money into a pension or investments- my aunt never upscaled her home and spent money on nice holidays etc- she now has an issue with regards to her elderly care as no children and no ability to downsize.

How long is longer commute? I can't really see many positives in what you're suggesting but I may be missing something.

Frenchroots · 02/06/2021 10:11

Good advice OnlyFools.
Swedish, I guess my current commute through the city is through areas which are pretty grim, moving would add 20 mins or so but would be through countryside and more suburban areas instead. The dirt, graffiti, amount of people etc in the city does get me down at times but I guess there’s lots of positives here too.

Definitely stay put, in your position.

Grizalda · 02/06/2021 10:50

I'd stay if I were you.
Rural life isn't all it's cracked up to be, if you're used to socialising, great takeaways and really good amenities in walking distance.
Maybe keep an eye on Rightmove if you think you need something different, I suppose you never know what might pop up that's some sort of compromise in whatyyou feel is missing from your current property.

Livingintheclouds · 02/06/2021 10:51

I'm a city person so no question I'd stay put!

Bluntness100 · 02/06/2021 10:52

The way that’s written is all upside to stay all down side to leave. Why ask? 😂

FourCandelabras · 02/06/2021 10:59

Definitely stay! Can’t really see any benefits to making the move.

Frenchroots · 02/06/2021 12:01

Thanks everyone, I know it’s not the worst problem to have by far!
I haven’t explained the upside of moving (which probably shows my thoughts about it today which could then change tomorrow!)
The area we are looking at has its own small high st with cafes, restaurants etc and also has better train links so it’s not cut off. We just don’t know anyone there yet and would be swapping our lovely, period house for a smaller, ugly house to be in a prettier place with countryside on our doorstep.

Rural life isn't all it's cracked up to be,

This!

We found out the hard way and are moving back to the city ASAP

sunshinesupermum · 04/06/2021 18:42

Stay put. I don't understand your rationale for a move to a small ugly house with longer mortgage away from your friends and support group!

Ilovemaisie · 04/06/2021 19:15

I would love to move from city to rural but it wouldn't be practical for my family.
Other than the commute ask yourself can you easily get from the rural place to somewhere to buy a pint of milk/emergency paracetamol/loo roll from the rural place?
What's it like in winter?
What are the internet connections like or telly signals?
I would do a big pros and cons list.
