Permitted Development rules for bungalows

Hi, we’ve seen a house we’re potentially interested in purchasing. It will need work doing to it. What are the permitted development rules for bungalows? Is converting the bungalow to a two storey property okay under permitted development rules? The height of the property would be higher. What is the max. extra height for bungalows? Sorry! It’s all so confusing to me. Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

We put a new roof with lot conversion on our bungalow, which involved raising the ridge height significantly. We definitely needed planning, but there was no issue with it.

Worth a call to building control / planning at your local authority where you’re interested in buying the bungalow. They can talk you through what’s allowed in your area broadly and give you guidance on the process. Anything that changes the thermal envelope of the house (so external walls, doors and roofing) will require planning permission. A good guide is are there other bungalows on your area already doing this? For example on my area no one has done this and turn out it’s now allowed due to the conservation nature of the village (even though the estate I'm on are al 1980s standard bungalows).

Definitely look on your council'a planning permission application page on their website. Search for the road/postcode and look to see what others have got approved - that will also give you a good idea whether someone has been approved or rejected for similar
