Neptune Vs John Lewis of Hungerford

I've namechanged for this because DH knows I'm posting this and I don't want him to be able to advance search me (he's a secret MNer).

We are fitting a new kitchen later this year and it's currently a choice between Neptune or John Lewis of Hungerford.

Does anyone have any experience or reviews of either company? They are broadly comparable on price.

Thanks

I have a John Lewis of Hungerford kitchen. I have a handleless style in very dark navy. They supplied and fitted it. I love it. Good looking, solid and it has held up to tenants well. They also supplied the integrated microwave, fridgr/freezer, washer/dryer and dishwasher, cooker and installed a quooker tap. I had to have some of the plumbing done first.
I love how solid it feels and the insides look as good as the outside.
I also love the look of Neptune but have no experience.

Just to put it out there but I had a carpenter/cabinet maker fit a unit in my kitchen, completely bespoke. I looked at Neptune too and the prices were about double what I ended up paying.

JL of H here, now 21 year old Artisan kitchen, they arranged an independent fitter then who was excellent. May be all in-house now.

Thanks for the feedback!

We're going for a Shaker style. I hadn't heard of Harvey Jones but will take a look and see if they have any availability for appointments. We need to make a decision this week to lock in the current pricing so we may need to restrict it to JL vs Neptune.

Hi - can I ask what the pricing looks like? Is it more like Devol (30+) or in the 15-30K bracket?

elfofftheshelf · 01/06/2021 14:03

We have looked at Neptune (we have some of their furniture and like the style) but as I understand it, their kitchens are made in China (finished / assembled here in their UK warehouse), and that put me off. They are probably a little less expensive than JL of H, but I think you get what you pay for at this price point.

Devol have quoted £30k approx, JL is coming in at £27K including fitting (but we have locked in their spring sale prices) and Neptune is £21-24K excluding fitting (we're looking at two different styles with Neptune).

This is a really good point!

We had a Neptune kitchen fitted 8 years ago. Some standard units and some bespoke, all painted by their guy. It looks and works as well as it did when it was new after years and years of heavy family use. I was slightly nervous about the units being made in China but the workmanship was utterly solid. We haven't had a single problem.

Thanks for the idea on quotes. It's actually surprising how little there is in the difference.

Livingintheclouds · 02/06/2021 08:23

When I got my very first John Lewis of Hungerford back in the late 90s it was a step down in price to Harvey Jones, which is what I really wanted, and I don't recall Neptune existing then (it may have, but not as big as today).
I'm doing another, much bigger kitchen soon and afraid those kitchens are beyond my budget! I am thoroughly seduced by the styling in the Neptune ads though.

NewHouseNewMe · 02/06/2021 08:56

Hi @Livingintheclouds - what are you considering instead?

I'm really torn between one of the above and Pineland. When painted, I can't see a lot of difference but am worried about durability.

Yes - I’m having a Handmade kitchen of Christchurch fitted currently - I’m very impressed with the quality as is my fitter and the joiner who has done other work for us.
We looked at Harvey Jones and Neptune prior to choosing HKOC- the quality is superior to Neptune which I admit is very nice especially the whole look in their showrooms, and equal to HJ which does give a more comprehensive service but you do pay for that.
We paid £7,000 for our units and for that we have a larder, pantry doors, 4 x 3 drawer units, a larder top and base cupboard, fridge surround with top cupboard, a bin unit and a sink unit - all but the last two are 1metre wide. Included in the cost are drawer inserts, spice racks, pelmets and kickboards etc.
On top of the cost of the units we have fitting costs of approx £1,500 and painting the units which is £2,800.
One thing to bear in mind is that they have a long lead time as they are very popular.
I haven’t seen a Pineland kitchen but we have two wardrobes made by them - they are very solid and well made and they come sprayed in your choice of colour matched to paint ranges like F&B and Little Greene.
Excellent customer service from both HKOC and Pineland.
