Leigh on Sea - Flight Path

Hello!
I’ve seen some articles on this, but I never saw any true outcome to the discussions.
We are hoping to move to Leigh on Sea this year and found a wonderful home near Blenheim park, to the west of it. The property is directly in the flight path.
We’ve been reading about the flight path debacle and was wondering how much this would affect us - we are trying to be in the area for arrivals and departures. Appreciate flights have lowered recently, and we’ve never noticed planes outside of small propeller ones before (these don’t bother us). How much of an issue is this? Other than Broadway, most of the area appear to be in the flight path, with this property being within a mile and a half of the edge of the runway.

Would love to know your thoughts

Thanks

Yes-it is usually noisy around Blenheim Ward and the planes are very low! The airport has died a bit of a death with covid though, so is quieter at the moment but who knows what will happen with EasyJet going forwards.

The area around The Broadway in Leigh is usually seen as much more desirable than the bits of Leigh that are north of the London road, but parking there can be dire. There are a lot of ex-council houses around Blenheim Chase though which put some people off as well.

Thank you, @Letseatgrandma. This is our concern that we’ve seen it in good light when a year down the line, we’ll be experiencing the true nature of the area. Appreciate its all subjective, we did see a lot of happy people in the area, which could be due to the low output from the airport at the minute.

Is it directly under the path? If so, some houses are quite badly affected, but just 2-3 roads to one side seem fine. They seem to stick very, very closely to the exact same path.

The only way to know for sure if it bothers you is to sit outside for a period when you know they are due.

(LOS is a lovely town to live in)

TowelStripes · 31/05/2021 15:16

My in laws live in LOS on the flight path near Belfairs Woods and i find it annoying when we visit. They barely notice it.

russitaevanita · 31/05/2021 16:28

Thank you @Chewbecca & @TowelStripes
It doesn’t appear to be directly under the line, but within a street or 2
We’ve planned some trips to be in the vicinity more when there are arrivals and departures. I was there the other night for an hour, but it seem to be a quiet point between 10-11pm. We are looking at Essex Ave where the plane seems to go over Blenheim Park.

There are few planes at the moment, check out the Southend Airport website to see arrivals / departures.

I don't think there is an Essex Avenue in Leigh? There is an Essex Gardens? It's about the worst for flight noise you can get BUT it's not like Heathrow anywhere!

russitaevanita · 31/05/2021 17:33

Thank you @Chewbecca. You’re correct, Essex Gardens. I have a feeling we’re going to pull the offer on this place - it seemed too good to be true at the time. The search continues!

Here’s the flight path. Bear in mind, they try to go North over Rochford instead of south over Leigh (as less densely populated), so some days we have no Flights at all.

Your potential road is marked in green, and I’ve marked mine too - both a little to the NW of the flight path. It causes us no problem at all. However, you are much closer to the airport so planes are lower then.

I know two people who have suffered from the airport noise and moved as a result. Have marked them with red blobs - both directly under the flight path. So, personally, I would avoid houses directly under but not avoid elsewhere.

Thank you so so much @Chewbecca, this is invaluable information. We are going to scope out the area more. Worse comes to worse, we can pull our offer if it’s accepted and we feel the plane noise is too much. It looks like the planes go over the park, which is about a 10 minute walk away

The difficulty is that there aren’t really many planes at the moment so that doesn’t give a true reflection of what it used to be/will be like.

I currently live in Rochford directly under the flight path (the landing wheels are down when the planes go over our garden!). We have just bought a house in Leigh off the Broadway. Despite the airport being so close to our current house it's never been an issue. Easy Jet is no longer flying from Southend. The Ryanair planes are the loudest so if you can arrange to be in Leigh whilst one of those go overhead you'll gauge the best idea of the flight path. Leigh is a lovely area -good luck with your move!

whineybing · 01/06/2021 10:55

I read recently that Ryanair are increasing their flights from Southend. We live about 3 miles away from the area you are looking at (we live in Hadleigh), and the planes are no bother to us but we are not directly under the flight path. Leigh is easily accessible from most areas around it, we can walk to the station in about 30/40 minutes.

AngelDelightUk · 01/06/2021 21:53

I live under the Heathrow flight path, honestly after a while you don’t even hear them anymore

russitaevanita · 02/06/2021 05:49

Thank you so much everyone for your advice and experiences. We’ve just had our offer accepted. Whilst it’s not set in stone, we've got an itinerary of flights to be in the area for, so if we feel it’s going to be an issue, we can always pull out. We currently live on a main busy road, so the difference in noise might be negligible.

Can't help wrt to the planes but have friends in Leigh and it's a lovely place. Quite villagey feeling as you walk through the town.

earsup · 04/06/2021 22:53

the airport expansion has been put on hold....so in future this could affect things if goes ahead...

Marmaladeagain · 04/06/2021 23:00

I know people that live in the area and say have never seem as many properties on the market - great time to sell when the flights are non-existent. It certainly has good points, but i couldn’t tolerate the overhead noise and sometimes have been open mouthed at planes overhead, but if used to Heathrow or generally a noisy area then it probably won’t even register. It’s a very personal and individual perception, something to bear in mind when asking sellers whether they are bothered by the noise.

Hyperion100 · 04/06/2021 23:07

We looked at a few lovely places in Leigh on the Marine estate but were put off by the noise.

Although I am very noise sensitive.
