Selling up - how far to go with cleaning, filling wall holes and touching up paint?

Selling up and moving house in three weeks.

We've had the oven professionally cleaned, fixed all door handles that were a bit stiff, and replaced two doors that were damaged. I plan to clean all paintwork, skirting boards, outdoor space, inside cupboards etc.

BUT we've removed all wall pictures etc and will fill the holes but we don't have and can't get the same colour paint to touch up for the kitchen and one bedroom.

What do we do about this? Leave it? Repaint the entire room in a different colour?

You sound very conscientious. We moved into a house with huge nails in the walls. I didn’t know they were there previously as there were pictures hung on the walls. I pulled the nails out and filled them in but haven’t painted over the pollyfilla.
I wouldn’t ever clean down skirting boards and paintwork. I’ve just cleaned to a reasonable level. I think you’re being a little too conscientious. I wish every seller was like you. One of the doors was peeling when we moved in too.

Wow, you have done loads already! Most sellers don't do half of that. I've just moved into a house where they've left a load of old junk behind, pots of paint , broken garden ornaments, pictures and all sorts. The house itself is quite clean but they certainly didn't have the oven professionally cleaned. I wouldn't do any more if I were you. I'd say your buyers are already very lucky!

Don’t paint if they’ve already accepted the offer, because their offer already takes into account that a touch up is needed. If you want to put to market then you can do it but prob only worth it if the walls are horrible and stained.

You just need to leave it reasonably clean. Everything else they will be expecting to do themselves. They've likely got their own colours they'll want.

Our buyer told us not to bother as he was taking our kitchen, bathrooms etc. Still made sure it was clean.

Don’t have too high expectations of how the house you are buying will be left...

PaterPower · 30/05/2021 09:52

I echo the PP, you don’t need to be touching up paintwork. They’ll more than likely repaint it all to suit themselves anyway, so it’ll be wasted effort.

Mumdiva99 · 30/05/2021 09:56

I would rather you leave the nail in than fill and not paint the hole. I can stuck a picture there until we decide what to do. But a mess is horrible.

Our sellers left the walls in a state after taking down curtain rails etc.....

I contemplated finishing off the glossing I’d started prior to going on the market, but now not sure if I can be bothered.

I'm completely over the top about cleaning when I move, the thought of the new people thinking we're s bit grotty really really bothers me.

I think you're bonkers to have replaced doors - presumably they were damaged when your buyers viewed?!

I also wouldn't have taken the hooks out of the walls. The people we bought from recently did that (and then used pollyfilla over textured wallpaper Hmm) and it was a pain not being able to just chuck our pictures up on the wall to keep them safe.

titchy · 30/05/2021 10:41

You must be renting surely? No one selling does all that - the offer was made based on viewed condition. Clean it yes, replace doors, fill and repaint - no way! Shock

Livingintheclouds · 30/05/2021 11:55

Im like you - I'm still doing those annoying little jobs even though I've exchanged and move in two weeks. I want to leave the house as I would hope to find it, as I've had to move in to pretty disgusting properties which I resent to this day! I will make sure all lights are working, the oven is cleaned, the carpets shampooed, floors steamed cleaned.
I have loads of pictures and I'm not taking them down until the packers arrive the day before. So I'm leaving the hooks in, and either the new owners hang their own art or fill it.

DespairingHomeowner · 30/05/2021 13:06

Agree to leave picture hooks/nails if you can vs filling holes - when I moved recently it was good to get things out of the way, and I’ve recently repainted with my own colours

If you see talking tiny nail holes, probably better not to fill at all I you won’t paint over - that will be less visible than white filler
