3 bedrooms be 3 kids - who gets which room?

Hi all

I have a 3 year old and twins on the way. I have 3 bedrooms. One decent size box room and 2 larger bedrooms.

I was thinking of putting my 3 year old in the big room and the twins in the box room. It can fit 2 cots in the box room. In a few years I can convert the loft and leave our bedroom for the twins.

Does that sound sensible or should I put the twins in the bigger room, toddler in the box room!

Sounds sensible- babies don’t need a big room and your toddler will as he grows

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 30/05/2021 05:56

If you can fit the babies in the box room, go for that. My DD2 is 8mo and in our large box room. Plenty big enough for her and her stuff. DD1(7yo) has more toys and needs the floor space for playing.

Castlepeak · 30/05/2021 06:10

Does a few years equal 3? Do you think the box room will comfortably accommodate two 3 year olds? What if renovations get delayed and it ends up being two 4 year olds?

I wouldn’t put yourself into a position where you have to make your older child give up the bigger room.

MyOtherProfile · 30/05/2021 06:14

I'd start 3 yr old in box room and twins in bigger room if there's any chance it will be more than 18 months before you can do the loft conversion.

andivfmakes3 · 30/05/2021 06:15

I had the same scenario! I moved toddler into the box room and the twins have the bigger room. There is also space for a bed in the twins room as well as 2 cots and it's been a godsend to be able to sleep in there with the twins

CutieBear · 30/05/2021 06:27

Toddler in the box room and twins in the big room. They are sharing so they need more room. You don’t know if the loft conversion will go ahead if you’re simply thinking “in a few years.”

BigHeadBertha · 30/05/2021 06:31

Little ones don't like to sleep by themselves. I think it is unnatural and at some level, they know they're defenseless and alone and it contributes to those very common sleeping problems. If it's at all practical for you, I'd put them all in the same room and let them have their own rooms when they request them.

andivfmakes3 · 30/05/2021 06:41

Just on @BigHeadBertha post I sort of agree. My daughter is a bit older though (reception age) - had she been younger I'd definitely have put all 3 in the same room. She has actually asked if she can move into the twins room once they are older than 6 months and I can move back in my room. If we do that then I'll be changing the box room to a play room

rainbowstardrops · 30/05/2021 07:01

I would put the toddler in the box room and the twins in the larger room. Presumably you'll need a nursing chair, changing mat etc etc so will need more space.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 30/05/2021 07:04

Toddler in box room.
Before you know it, twins will be toddlers, and toddler will be school age with shrinking toys. There are lots of clever ways to maximise space in smaller rooms (and if it fits two cots it isn't tiny).

Theoldwoman · 30/05/2021 07:11

I would take the box room for my self and husband. You don’t need much space really. Kids need play room and room to store larger toys.

Checkingout811 · 30/05/2021 07:13

Toddler in box room, twins in larger room. Could you move a wall in the box room & one of the larger rooms as a quick & cheap fix to make the box room & the larger room more equal.
If it’s a standard 3 bed house layout, this is usually possible and an easy solution.
You and DH then have the other large room and all DC have a decent sized room.

MonsterKidz · 30/05/2021 07:15

I had this scenario growing up!

I was 9 when my younger twin siblings were born. I had the bigger room and as they were babies they had their cots in the box room. The cots were basically the only thing in there.

Once they were 2/3 can’t remember exactly when I had to give up the bigger room and take the box room. I don’t recall being too precious about it, we had a cool cabin type bed built for me to maximise the space.

We then moved about 3 years later as we had all outgrown the space.

I would say put the toddler in the box room now, their toys will likely be in the living room for the next few years anyway, you won’t want them going off and playing upstairs on their own just get Id imagine, especially when needing to keep an eye on twins.

Just showing an example -

I’ve posted an original floor plan and then my highly skilled edited version 😂

Really? You think she can fit a double bed and two sets of wardrobes and cupboards into the box room?
Aprilwasverywet · 30/05/2021 10:17

When I just had 3 I had the smallest room!! Dd had the middle sized and 2 boys had the biggest.
Think on though 2 young dc sharing may not work out. I had to split mine up (year apart) as they just woke each other up. Dd had one in her room when 3 became 4!

lboogy · 30/05/2021 15:30

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I did consider using the box room for me and DH but it's not big enough space to put a double bed. It's just under 8x8 ft.

I'd rather not make the front big room smaller to make the road ms equal size. I think it affects saleability. Plus the door is in an awkward place.

We have a loft room already which has decent head height and proper stairs so I'll let the toddler sleep up there if I can't afford a loft in 2-4 years time.

In the meantime I'll put the toddler in the box room. That's seems more sensible as I will need a chair and other baby kits.

Put your toddle in the box room and twins in the bigger room. Assuming they’ll always share. It will be harder to shift a 6 year old into a box room in future if you don’t do the loft conversion

Twiglets1 · 31/05/2021 07:57

I think it's obvious to put the toddler in the box room and the twins in the larger room where there will be more space for two cots

BruceAndNosh · 31/05/2021 08:02

Which room does 3 year old have at present?

Goodtohear · 31/05/2021 14:24

I had this I put my twins in largest double, toddler in box room and I had smaller twin room worked for many years.
Just a thought I only ever had one cot they shared till they were 18 months then went into separate beds (although they always seemed to be together).

Branleuse · 31/05/2021 15:38

id put the 3 year old in the box room so that you dont have to kick him out later down the line once hes got an opinion on it

ittakes2 · 01/06/2021 08:55

I have twins - they have a lot of stuff and if one is crying its best to have the other cot on the other side of the room if you can - go the bigger room for twins.
