Short notice visitor in next few days, windowsills are a mess and I have plans in place to do them properly but haven’t time before this visitor comes. They are a mess white painted but the paint is bubbly and cracked and I really need time to sand, smooth and prep and paint.

But I need ideas and possibly recommendation of something I can buy to cover them up for now as visitor will moan at me if they see how bad they are and I could do without the stress.

In my head I’m thinking a temporary stick on plastic something? But not like cling film type plastic something solid but easy to work with as I haven’t anything to cut thick plastic with and just stick it on with some poly filler or similar for now it literally just needs to do me for this weekend.

I am in a bit of a panic I must admit and so can’t think for myself so hoping you guys can help please? It’s stressing me right out

Anything you stick on over the top will look awful as it's all lumpy underneath. Plus you will have to work hard to get it all off again.

Really you just need to accept that they look rubbish for this visit.

You could also spend a bit of time with some paint stripper on one of them so this visitor can see they are a work in progress. But really they can piss off with their attitude.

Sticky back plastic. B&q do it for £6 a roll that’s 2m long and half a metre or something wide. Comes in gloss or Matt white and loads of different colours.

You can also get in eBay etc or online.

Also called car wrap vinyl or kitchen vinyl etc. as cars and kitchen cupboards can be refreshed using it.

Tutorials online.

Quick solution is to put on your grown adult pants on and tell your visitor that you are aware of the state of the windowsills and that it is your business not theirs.

Ostara212 · 27/05/2021 18:26

Tell them you've tested positive and have to isolate. Repeat as needed.

Seriously, tell them to p off.

Bargebill19 · 27/05/2021 18:28

Buy a paint brush, sandpaper and paint.
Give to visitor and say how much you appreciate them coming to help….

jazzandh · 27/05/2021 18:32

You are doing these people a favour by hosting them.

By messing about with your windowsills - you will create more work for yourself.

If you have time, sand them back and fill. They will look fresh and clean just for that.

So sand, then fill. Leave 24hours for filler to dry and then sand again. Nice smooth windowsills.

You will spend just as long faffing about with an alternative!

QuickTipsNeeded · 27/05/2021 18:38

Hahaha the assertive posts are making me laugh, unfortunately not an option

The vinyl looks a possible option but not sure it will look totally right, I’m thinking maybe some thick cardboard underneath?

It’s literally a quick visit but I can’t postpone or cancel

Does this sound doable?

Thick card cut to fit, covered in vinyl and stuck on with something just a bit stronger than blu tak? Any ideas?

Literally needs to work for just one day

OP I've sought out many cheap solutions to avoid expensive repairs

I haven't come across anything that would cover a windowsill unless it's a nice cloth!

mineofuselessinformation · 27/05/2021 18:51

If you haven't got the time and materials to do it properly, just front it out.
If they say a word about it, tell them you haven't had time to do it and ask them to help you.
Anything you do now as a bodge job will just make it harder when you want to do it properly or look like a pig's ear.

MrsRLynde · 27/05/2021 18:59

Sounds a hell of a faff - can you by some deep trays and fill with plants? Or artfully arrange books?

custardbear · 27/05/2021 19:03

Why don't you just start sanding down now? You could easily do one or two in a week or two - possibly even all of them!
Failing that why not buy new ones that are coated rather than painted (assuming you can get such a thing) and replace

HumourReplacementTherapy · 27/05/2021 19:09

Just put a tin of paint, a brush and some sandpaper sheets on the windowsill.
When they tut at you, tell them having a visitor at short notice ( hard stare 🤨) has meant you haven't been able to crack on with it
Any further tutting, tip said paint into their handbag/holdall
Smile

DespairingHomeowner · 27/05/2021 19:37

Are they deep enough to stack a load of paperbacks on to cover?

QuickTipsNeeded · 27/05/2021 19:55

Not deep enough for books I don’t think plus kinda bay window style? But shallow/sharp edges? Hard to explain

Borrow a cat - mine seem to like sunny windows. Sorry, not being helpful.

Seriously- short visit? Just ignore any carping from your visitor - they are being rude just to mention the “state of your windows.” Which I suspect isn’t as bad as you think. So long as the glass is still in the casing - it’s good enough. Decor can be sorted when you actually have time to do it properly.

Bluntness100 · 27/05/2021 20:11

Op who is this visitor? Why are you in such a panic about your windowsills of all things?

Jasmine245 · 27/05/2021 20:19

Just tell them you are not feeling 100% and would rather meet in the gatden.

QuickTipsNeeded · 27/05/2021 20:34

It’s a relative and they are very fussy about home maintenance.

It’s a relative and they are very fussy about home maintenance.
What relative, and is it your home or theirs?
Bargebill19 · 27/05/2021 22:14

Tell them it’s diy weekend.

De88 · 27/05/2021 22:17

Get yourself to a supermarket and buy lots of little plants and herbs in pots. Or just tell them to f off.

Do you live in their home?
secretburper · 27/05/2021 22:31

Don't be embarrassed by a 'work in progress' property , if these visitors are worth having to visit you then they should be fine that you are doing some work in the future to renovate your property
I'm saying this as someone who continuously buys a wreck then does it up before moving on to the next wreck , anyone worth bothering with should accept that you are working on improvements
Don't bodge or cover up , that's just extra work that will need to be done again , hold your head up proudly and show them what plans you have in store

HalfBrick · 27/05/2021 22:36

Agree with pp, have the sandpaper/paint out as if you're half way through the job. Shows effort without actually doing it...
