Moving house

How does it work?Where we are hoping to move to there is limited places to park let alone space for a big van parked outside your new home. The roads are so narrow blocking the road can be the only way I just can't see,and it scares me to death, how you get an hour or so unloading. Some of the houses have parking opposite but they are jam packed with neighbours cars.Do you knock on neighbours doors ,not a good start surely, and ask them to park elsewhere and how do you know who owns the cars if you do.
Does the removal company sort it out?I know present climate and I drive around London alot but I haven't seen a van in ages. Also if I wanted a friend to hire a Luton how would you do it.Or do some people just buy new furniture to save the hassle . Has anyone experience of this because where we are moving they don't even have one parking space ,just curious how its done thanks.

You sort ot. Apply to Council for a parking suspension notice (there is a charge). Gbd out from movers size of truck and you then tell the council haw many 'bays' you need. They will.put up notices in advance.

We had exactly the same problem but the removal company were wonderful and sorted it all out for us. I just told them my worries and they researched the area to check what size of van they could fit in or whether they needed to use two smaller vehicles. If they are a decent removal firm they will be used to this sort of thing and will sort it out for you. That's what you are paying them for, also other people are usually quite accommodating when they see a removal van as they realise it's only there for a short time and they must have had to move in themselves at one time.

OK thanks do appreciate that puts my mind at rest.Although I quite enjoyed the last two moves driving a Luton really is a blast. But it's going to be easier to pay the money obviously and let them sort it out.Shame it was so much fun.

Yes, previous times we've moved ourselves, hard work but saved a fortune. This time, cos we were downsizing to a tiny house on a very narrow road with houses across the road who all only have one parking space each at the front I just factored in the cost of a really good removal firm into the move and as they completely took over it was worth every penny. Good luck!

On one of our moves, with an extremely narrow road... They got everything outside, then the lorry turned up, they speed loaded in under an hour, then lorry left. They had to move twice to allow cars past. (And took out a neighbours fence...)

bigbaggyeyes · 27/05/2021 14:22

If you are using a removals company they should sort all that out for you

justgivein · 27/05/2021 14:28

Thank you.I was hoping to get the kids involved good experience i thought but you've made my mind up .One of the houses we really liked is/was on a fast hill so was really stressed about how to get neighbours to move their cars relieved to know the firm will sort it out it's the way to go.

Oh god not a good way to break the ice with your neighbour.Did the company arrange a new fence?

In our road the van blocks the road. It's a long narrow road with no side roads. Every so often the removal people take a break and the van drives round the block to free up the road.

@justgivein it was fortunately another property owned by DHs employer! (And empty!)
