Droitwich or Malvern?

Hi Peeps πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈ
Have recently sold our house in Worcester and we’re thinking of moving to either Droitwich or Malvern. I grew up in Droitwich on and off and have fond memories of the place. Always felt safe there - although that was the 80’s! Went to the lido on a lovely hot day back in 2019 and was very impressed. Families and teenagers hanging out and the atmosphere was really nice. I left that day really wanting to move back there. Then there’s Malvern with the hills and we always love walking round there - so beautiful. Recently viewed a house in Welland and even though the house wasn’t quite for us we fell in love with the Welland. As you can see we are torn and it’s slim pickings on the market at the moment. So anyone who also knows these have any advice for us? I went to St Peters and Wilton in Droitwich but never went to Droitwich Spa? Is it a good school?

Thanks for reading Smile

Forgot to add, also grew up in Droitwich and I didn't have any issues with the high school there. I remember doing lots of out of school clubs, good sports equipment, came out with good grades Smile

Eatstoastalot · 25/05/2021 11:10

Thanks Badgeroony - have made note of that πŸ‘

The primary school from the hills house is literally 2 mins down the road - couldn’t get better. It’s my daughter getting to secondary school which is the problem. I’ve done some research and there is a bus in the mornings not far from our road that goes near to the Chase. Then it’s like a 6 min walk to the school. My daughter is not keen on this idea though. She’s quite a sensitive and anxious child and I’m ashamed to say I’ve wrapped her in cotton wool raising her. My mum walks her to her current school. She’s not having a good time in truth at her present school. Which is another reason we want to move.

Mimi91 - I know what u mean! Nothing new again today! It’s like a watched pot I suppose.

*have extended search to Pershore.

What sort of house are you looking for? I always enjoy looking at houses on other peoples behalf Smile

Magstermay · 25/05/2021 12:06

I would ring the agents as well as emailing, build up a rapport so they think of you when a property comes up.

Eatstoastalot · 25/05/2021 14:11

Last night I emailed every estate agent I know. 🀞

CMOTDibbler - we would like at least 3 beds with the 3rd being a decent size - not a box room like my son currently has. Our current house is detached and has suit us well as we’re quite a noisy family...husband plays the guitar, daughter plays keyboard and we love watching movies with a decent sound system if u know what I mean. I’d personally also like a utility room - don’t mind if it’s small...and and extra toilet is worth it’s weight in gold. If it’s close to some greenery kids can play on of some kind then garden doesn’t have to be big. Also within walking distance to primary and secondary schools...or at least a very straight forward bus route from home to school. Areas are of course Malvern, Pershore, Worcestershire countryside. Still haven’t ruled out Droitwich completely. Moon on a stick maybe? 😁

Thank you so much for looking if you do πŸ™‚ and sorry for the long post.

No idea on your budget, but theres a bungalow on Holloway which is lovely (5 min walk to open fields as well), and a larger house on Hunters Rise which is a really nice estate Wink and what they don't show you is the enormous green round the corner.
Everything in Pershore is walking distance which is a bonus.

Eatstoastalot · 26/05/2021 19:38

Thanks CMOTDibbler πŸ™‚. Will check those out - do u have links?

Our max would be Β£400,000.

Also looking at Bromyard now.

OP posts:
Shadowboy · 26/05/2021 19:59

Bromyard is lovely but the arse end of anywhere! Lots of walks and very quaint but at least 30 min from a motorway so if you need to get anywhere it’s a bit annoying.

IliveinDroitwich · 26/05/2021 20:08

Well I live in Droitwich and I really like it! πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

CMOTDibbler · 26/05/2021 20:34

This house is nice - its on a quiet road with lovely views, 10 min walk to first/middle school, 20 min to the high school, 5 min to the open fields into Tiddseley woods.

Or this one which is closer to the high school and has a utility room.

Eatstoastalot · 28/05/2021 11:56

Hi CMOTDibbler, thanks so much for scouting for me. The first one unfortunately is very similar to our current house and without an extension which ours has. We’ve also changed our minds about Pershore. Just really still drawn to Malvern and also Martley and near by...don’t know if I mentioned Martley before. So pretty round there 😍

I’ve signed up for property alerts now from onthemarket, Zoopla and Rightmove which saves me having to keep putting my searches in to the app each time only to find...there’s still nothing! 😩.

Oh well πŸ™‚

Also anyone have any knowledge of primary and secondary schools in Malvern? Between Dyson Perrins and The Chase - which would you say is best?

Malvhina · 29/05/2021 20:09

My DC is going to start at Chase in the autumn. It has always been our intention - it's gone up and down a bit in recent years, but people are so happy with the current head (who was deputy for years) and it all seems to be working out well. Dyson's is losing its sixth form, and of course Chantry doesn't have one, if these are considerations. About half of DC's Y6 year group are going to each of Chase and Dyson's and a few others elsewhere (the Worcester indies and Hanley).

We are not on the hill - currently hill-adjacent! But high up, so I get views. Obvs, West Malvern is lovely, and I would like to live there, but I like where I am too, and it is that little bit more convenient for running out of milk, and the DC being able to walk to places in town and the train station when a bit older. We'll be moving soon, hopefully, but will probably stay around this bit. I have lived on the flat bits too, and it's fine down there. I actually like the Barnard's Green area; the roads around Gt Malvern station have lovely properties, but it doesn't feel as on 'edge of rural' as other parts of town (good commons close by though).

I will DM you if you like about primaries (only an authority on DS' school, though!), but I don't really want to post it here.

I rather like Pershore. I drive through a couple of times a week, and always think it would be nice having such a lovely high street. I swam there a lot pre-Covid, as their pool is nice and quiet. We did think about it when relocating up here, but a mix of things made us go for Malvern. But I would have happily lived in either place. Ledbury too.

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 29/05/2021 21:22

@Malvhina can I be cheeky and ask you to DM me about primaries too? We’re due to move to Great Malvern soon, and our catchment schools have no space for DD so we’ve had to go for a school further away. Would love to hear your take on primaries to see how the one we’ve chosen is viewed!

wtheck · 29/05/2021 21:28

Christ, do not move to Bromyard!

It's like the town in Hot Fuzz. Walk in the pub and you're not 'local' then you're in trouble. Friend moved there - moved away after 2 years as it was so unwelcoming!

Ledbury, on the other hand, gorgeous and friendly.

wtheck · 29/05/2021 21:32

Have you looked at Colwall or Cradley? Both have great primaries and are lovely villages.

West Malvern all the way for me though, although if you move to West Malvern Road make sure you have private parking as it can be quite busy at the weekends and bank holidays etc.

Mischance · 29/05/2021 21:36

Malvern every time.

Malvhina · 29/05/2021 22:33

I don't see much appeal in Bromyard - I go there now and again, was there last weekend, for a potter around for an hour or so (mainly because of the good butchers there), and it's fine, but not somewhere I could imagine living. It's quite a bit cheaper than Malvern/Ledbury/Pershore though, for property. But I don't warm to it.

Hello again. Thought I'd just bump up this thread with an update rather than start a new one.

I had forgotten about this thread actually and the fact I'd briefly discussed Bromyard in it so the blood drained from my face when I read the comment about staying away from Bromyard because it's like the town in Hot Fuzz - in that they don't like newcomer's - as we're very likely moving there now! We went for our second visit today and had a good walk round the place and found people to be friendly with smiles and greetings Confused
Would find it a comfort if anybody that knows Bromyard has some positive things to say about it Grin as we're quite commited.

Thanks again for reading Smile

Curious to know @Eatstoastalot did you choose Bromyard in the end, or somewhere else?

we’re moving to the area, but have resolved to stay nearer to Worcester for the travel links and sports facilities for our kids

Your thread has been v helpful though! :)
