Nice areas of Leeds but still reasonable

Evening all. I'm looking to move to Leeds for work. I know the centre well but don't want to live there.

Where are nice areas for a budget of around 300-325? Ideally detached or semi at a push.

I know Morley and Rothwell popular areas. Horsforth alway seems to top the lists too.

I'm happy to live further out if more for money so Wakefield or Pontefract distance.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Here's one, in Horsforth - it's end of terrace though:

four bedrooms for £299,950

I often look at threads on Leeds out of nosiness as I lived there in my teens (1970s). I rarely see mention of the area where we lived - Cookridge. It was nice but dull then. Good transport links, though. What's it like now?

VenusClapTrap · 22/06/2021 11:08

Drighlington? I grew up there and it was always easy to get into town either driving or on the bus. Plenty of amenities and a rural feel despite its proximity to Leeds. I see my old school has been turned into housing - this is within your budget op.
@mangochutneylass you still haven't said how many bedrooms you need, or if you need to be near a school. Those things are just as important as your budget!
Oh sorry thought I had answered previously, yes it would help !

Schools not important, my son is grown up and no longer lives with me.

Ideally 3 bedrooms so I can have one bedroom, one guest and then one as home office as I work from home some of the time. So not too bothered if that's quite small. Reason i'd prefer detached is that I have only lived in detached and not sure I want to go back to non detached living.

Otley is nice, but the commute isn't. For an easier commute Pudsey, Farsley and Rodley are more likely to fit your budget.

Here’s a detached in Drighlington:

West Leeds - Calverley, Farsley and Pudsey are nice. Pudsey is a bit bigger but Calverley and Farsley have a village feel. Just into Bradford is Eccleshill, Wrose and Idle which are all very nice and significantly cheaper than Leeds and so you can get a detached for £300k easily.

Keepingitreal14 · 22/06/2021 11:23

Have a look at Churwell New Village just outside Morley, we have Cottingley station within the Village, walking distance to the White Rose centre and 10 mins in a Uber to Leeds Town Centre.

Houses come up fairly often plus they are extending the back of the estate with more new builds.

Peabody25 · 22/06/2021 11:34

This one in Farsley? www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/108330320

Farsley itself is lovely. Really nice high street with independent shops including a new book shop, plenty of bars, restaurants, thriving local businesses and five mins away from a huge Asda and M&S. There's another nearby retail park with Aldi, home bargains, b&m.

New Pudsey train station is a short drive or 10-20 minute walk away and 15 mins on the train to Leeds.

WrinklesShminkles · 22/06/2021 17:39

I'm in Calverley - nice but not many amenities. I'd choose Farsley if I wanted to commute by train - it's lovely! Be careful of Horsforth as it's close to Leeds Bradford Airport and there's a lot of aircraft noise under the flight paths.

Only the bits up by Scotland Lane are really bad. The top ‘half’ you maybe want to think about. Just make sure you pay attention to a couple of planes and see what you think. Depends on your tolerance.
MidnightMeltdown · 03/07/2021 14:06

Also, only a limited number of planes are allowed to fly over Horsforth each month so they are very infrequent. I wouldn't let that put you off unless you're very close to the airport.

DancingDog · 09/07/2021 20:19

How is it going have you found anywhere? Have you looked at cool ridge? Good schools, access to countryside very easily - it’s not too far from Harrogate and the dales and walking distance to horsforth train station.

DancingDog · 09/07/2021 20:19

*cookridge - not cool ridge!

mangochutneylass · 09/07/2021 21:36

Thank you for asking. Sadly my buyer pulled out as I had spent too long looking for somewhere I don't really blame them.

I have decided to stay put a little longer as my work is letting me work remotely for as long as I like. Not much coming onto the market I can't really find anything I like so will wait and see what happens.

But lots of great suggestions I'm really thankfull.

If you do look again I would suggest

East Ardsley
Methley
Rothwell
Woodlesford
Outwood

I have commutes to Leeds from all them. The market is quick.

I also wouldn't buy new build in these areas. Castleford is right next to Methley. But Castleford has always been a lot cheaper and I mean alot. But the new builds in castleford are so expensive you could get a much better non new build house, in Methley which is a nicer place.

I have friends in Methley who have moved and they used 'Ewemove' the local agent made sure they were made aware of houses the minute they came up.

MillyMolly123 · 10/07/2021 23:33

Probably pretty much the same as when you lived there, with a couple of small changes.

Still no pub or bars (if we’re classing the Fox and Hounds as Horsforth and the Eerie as Holt Park, the latter now closed down), the parade of shops on Moseley Wood Drive was converted to residential dwellings a number of years ago. I think all that remains in terms of retail is the 7-11 (currently a Tesco Express, I think) on Green Lane.

Basically, still a pretty uneventful and boring place, but safe and pleasant enough.

Sadly much of the fields around the Moseley Woods were sold to a developer and a big soulless housing estate is in the process of being built.

I'm in headingley/Hyde park border. Grew up here and although it's always had students the mess and noise are worse than ever.

I am very fond of the area but there's been a party outside my house all night and it's not even term time.

My friend teaches at the local primary school and says that a lot of the kids are coming to school tired having not slept due to student noise. So just to warn you off!
