Paint for wooden highchair

Hi Mumsnetters!
After some advice...

I was lucky enough to pick up a beautiful wooden highchair for free recently. It has been well loved, so I am thinking about trying to spruce it up a little. It's for a toddler, not a baby (it's one of those "grows with them" chairs) so will be used like a chair at the table, rather than using the highchair tray.

I am just not sure whether to try and re-stain it (it's a dark brown wood stain) or to paint it a totally different colour with something like chalk paint.

I'd love some recommendations. Would a re-stain be tricky? Is chalk paint actually as good as it sounds? I live near an Annie Sloan stockist, but I have read some negative comments on here about it recently, so now wondering if a different paint might be preferable?

I am relatively inexperienced at "restoring" wooden furniture, so any guidance would be appreciated!

Alternatively I could just leave it as it is, as it's not I'm terrible condition and likely to get a little more battered while we are using it, anyway? I just like to fiddle with things. Grin

Frenchic al fresco is very hard wearing once it cures and can be used on all sorts of surfaces. Some nice colours too. I wouldn’t use other chalk paints as the ones I’ve tried aren’t as durable.
