Replacing Doors/ Windows in an old house

I am hoping for some advice on what type of material to use on replacing windows and doors in a sandstone 1850s house with original sash windows. Know it will cost to do it well so it looks like wood- any recommendations brands/ materials would be appreciated - needs to last another generation but look as original as possible !

Are you listed? In a conservation area?

Something like this is probably the best compromise but it is a compromise on aesthetics slightly.

1850s house? Replacing original windows? Don't mind spending for the right finish?

It's a no brainer. Use wood.

Decent UPVC isn't a crime in ten-a-penny Edwardian terraces (especially as in many cases they'll be replacing 20-30 year old previously replaced windows) but if you've got a lovely old house with original windows, I think you need to get it looking as identical as you possibly can.

Why not wood? You can't beat it for looks and authenticity. I have seen pvc sash windows that look pretty good though, but they are pretty close in cost.
