Engineered wood floors fading in sun?

Hi, does anyone have any experience of engineered wood on floors, next to large glazed such as bifold/sliding doors? Has the floor faded much? I’d prefer the wooden floor but builder says it’ll fade and I’ll never be able to match the colour when replacing

We had Kahrs flooring-it didn’t fade, so much as mellow to a more golden tone with sunlight through a large, west facing window. But it wasn’t that different to the rest of the floor-the main difference was the part of the floor covered by rugs/furniture stayed a more neutral tone. Still loved it.

Wooden usually darkens and yellows over time with sunlight rather than bleaches. It is common to end up with lighter patches under rugs and furniture. Are you thinking of getting a dark stained floor? It's possible that could bleach over time, especially if it's one that has been stained an unnatural colour (I've seen a blue-ish one installed in a friend's new extension).

Yes ours have faded in the sun a bit. They don't look bad, but if you lift the rug the colour difference is noticeable. That's been over 3 years.

I've never tried using anything on them to restore any colour or anything so that could make a difference.

Other than that they are great. Hard-wearing, easy to look after and clean and look smart.

Thanks for your messages! I was just looking at standard wide board engineered oak, but i also love the colour in this picture and think the fading will be more noticeable...

I've heard of the UV coating but also heard it eventually wears off with pets moving around etc. I guess i have to accept that nothing lasts forever!

If you are doing a renovation and installing new bifolds or sliding doors, then they generally come with laminated and/or toughened glass - which filters out a lot of the damaging UV rays.

Please ignore the filthy nature of my floor (it's our hallway!) I lifted a corner of the rug and you can see there is a colour difference. It's not huge but noticeable. That's been 3 years in a very sunny spot. We have it down in other rooms which are less sunny and there's no fade.

I live in sunny Australia in a house with large windows and engineered wood floors. The house is 15 years old, and the floors haven't faded at all.

londondee · 21/05/2021 10:06

Thanks for the comments everyone. Yes you're right Anticyclone that the doors these days have UV filters. These floors will be in a wide area kitchen diner, I'd prefer not to go for tiles... decisions, decisions Smile

It does fade/yellow a bit - I was going to sand my engineered wood floor and restain however going to try cleaning with sugar soap and then revarnish first - my floors have been down 10 years and the fading is minimal and still looks pretty good

Silkiecats · 21/05/2021 12:13

We had both engineering and real wood floors at old house for 10 years plus, real wood was varnished. Both floors lasted fine - real wood had to be sanded and revarnished once. Never noticed fading but didn't have rugs.

We have dark wood floors inherited by the previous owner. They're dark brown in the hallway and golden brown by the patio doors. One of many reasons I'll look forward to ripping them up!
