Watching this for tips. We currently rent in SE23 but looking at Sidcup/Orpington to buy in next year. DP grew up here so has quite fixed views of the different areas which I suspect might be slightly out of date.

@Catchrene
I have worked around Sidcup for a few years. It seems ok. Not exactly a hub of excitement, but ok. When you say that you are looking to live somewhere as “as a black couple” what exactly are you meaning, or looking for ? It is quite a predominantly white area. That doesn’t mean that you will necessarily feel isolated. But if you want somewhere that is multicultural, then Sidcup may not be the top of your list.

If you want safety, I have always felt safe, walking around, even at night.

If you want somewhere that is easy to drive to/from, the traffic in Sidcup is a pain. There are always traffic jams at peak times. I think that it is due to the high number of schools in the area. During school holidays, the traffic is great.

I don’t have kids, but, from the number of school kids that seem to come to the area (and the cars that their parents drive!) I assume that there are some good schools there. As you only mention that you are a couple, I assume that this is not currently on your list of priorities.

If you want somewhere that is accessible to other areas, then Sidcup is actually quite good, public transport-wise. It is a short journey into London and other hubs.

If you want good food, I quite enjoy the numerous restaurants in the area. There is a good variety of decent places.

If you want a decent place to have a drink, I think that Sidcup is found wanting in this area. There is a lack of anywhere decent. You may wish to go somewhere else for that. In which case, the train may be your best option.

If you want to go for a walk, there are a small number of places that you could go. Google maps is your friend, there.

To summarise, it is quite a nice area. A few standard chain shops on the high street. Safe to walk around. Not necessarily cheap to buy. Fairly green. Decent restaurants (but can get a great curry). Nice, but a bit bland.

Hope that helps

Have you thought of Welling/Shooters Hill area?

Catchrene · 18/05/2021 06:12

Thanks sooo much great info..... Yes we do have kids and so we r looking for an area that is friendly but cheaper than greenwich

Yes I have lived in Welling and it wasn't very friendly. Someone threw a fox in our garden and smashed a window in my car. Not a fan... This was about 5yrs ago so things may have changed

Really interested to know more about the area. Thinking of moving with hubby and 4yr old. Did you move there @FizzyPink?

FizzyPink · 12/09/2021 15:45

@Melabu no not yet. We most likely will buy somewhere around the area in the next 6 months or so but there doesn’t seem to be very much on the market at the moment. We’ve expanded our search area out a bit further but it’s a bit of a risk when we don’t know the areas very well and we’re mainly going on commuting distance

Thanks @FizzyPink. We're thinking of sticking with Bromley

Sidcup does have a suburban feel but it's easy enough to get to Greenwich, Blackheath and central London (20 minutes on the train to LB). It's not as multi cultural as the Greenwich Borough but you wouldn't get a second glance as a black couple. It has great schools but Grammar for secondary. Easy to get to the Grammars in Bromley and Dartford too. Very easy to get to the countryside and seaside. Properties are much cheaper than neighbouring Greenwich but are rising in price.

DA15 is a bit cheaper, DA14 has some very expensive parts.
