Trying to reduce builders' dust - do these work?

zip up doorway sheeting

I know I won't be able to prevent the dust entering the rest of the house, but I am trying to minimise it. We are having a window taken out, aperture made bigger, new window and sill fitted, in our study (first floor). It is a four day job, I'm told.

Any experience of barriers like this, or any recommendations please?

I don't know that product, I'm afraid, but you just need a sealed barrier no-one opens until the dust is cleared.
When I had patio doors cut into a stone wall in my kitchen, the buildets built a chipboard wall across for the duration.
My next door neighbours sellotaped a clear plastic shower curtain across their doorway.

They do help a bit, yes. We bought something similar from Screwfix. To be honest, you’ll still find dust gets everywhere but these barriers will reduce some of it.

They are absolutely brilliant if respected (i.e. kept closed even though its a hassle and shoes taken off as you walk through). We have the screwfix ones held up with gorilla tape and virtually no dust otherwise regardless of removing several stone walls.

(Caveat - my husband is a very tidy worker and has done all the demo work himself when kids and I weren't living there which definitely helped).

Thank you. I will look at the screw fix ones. The study is down a small corridor on the landing where there is only one door at the end (to the study). So I’m thinking of putting the barrier at the start of the corridor rather than on the door frame.

I would hope that the only time it will be opened is for workmen to come in and out. I will ask them to take off boots etc once the dirty work has started.

Does gorilla tape take paint away with it? We’ve just redecorated the landing.

Used similar and yes, they do make a big difference.
We had a supporting wall taken down right beside zip door, plus ceramic floor tiles jack hammered up.
Due to rather thoughtless positioning of Arco props, we couldn't actually shut the kitchen door to protect the rest of the house, the zip door was the only barrier.
Sadly you do need strong tape to hold it in place

Just coming to the end of a 6 month renovation (walls down, floor drilled up, ceilings down the full works) and lived here throughout- eek! Had these on every door where a room wasn’t being done and they were an absolute lifesaver. As someone else said, you really have to keep them zipped all the time although a bit of a pain and I kept doors shut too but really worked. Although there was some dust it was nowhere near what I hear from others who’ve had work done and we had majorly messy work for months on end

BruceAndNosh · 18/05/2021 09:31

The other advantage of zip doors is they discourage people from "just popping" in or out of the building zone cos they are a faff to open

HasaDigaEebowai · 18/05/2021 09:35

We have had some doorways boarded up which has helped. Others are more of a challenge so Im going to look at the zip up type.

Reporting back! Day one is over and the dirtiest of the work is done - the external wall for the bigger opening has been knocked out. The existing window is still in place, but the new window is waiting to go in.

We have very little dust in the remainder of the house. I can only think that the screw fix excluder has done its job properly. The fitters were very good about keeping it zipped up, and they only really came out of the room via the doorway when they absolutely had to - they used a ladder (flat roof just outside the window) mostly. So the excluder wasn’t being opened and closed that much.

We loosely nailed the excluder into the top of the doorway architrave, as tape wasn’t holding it at all.

Have to admit we have just got used to having mess everywhere and having to hoover and dust a lot, because we keep doing bits on different parts of the house as we have a doer-upper, but I'd like to thank the OP for their post. I'd never heard of these things, and we are due to do some more than usually messy work shortly in one specific room, so I will consider getting one/some of these, as I think they may be ideal for us! Thanks for the heads-up.
