This is taking so long

We put an offer in on a house at the end of Jan. everything our side is done.

Solicitor just has to look into an indemnity policy for a garage that was converted but that’s it.

Vendors took 3 weeks to find some paperwork. Then another couple of weeks where they said the surveyor wasn’t welcome.

Originally we were told (and so was the solicitor) that they were buying a house which had no chain.

Today, our solicitor called and said actually, it turns out they are only in the first steps of buying the house so it’s impossible to talk dates yet and that they have told their solicitor if we push on a date, they will take their house off the market.

If there was anything else suitable in the area I’d be tempted to tell them to sod it then and take the loss on what we’ve paid out so far but there isn’t.

We are currently in a shit rented house covered in black mould and I just want to get out.

Just bloody aghhhhhhh.

Speak to the estate agent. See where you stand.

Moonshine11 · 17/05/2021 13:40

If you were to start looking again your just going to end up in the same situation.
Just ride it out and keep pushing to the sellers

Alexapissoff · 17/05/2021 13:41

Oh the agent was no help all the way though. We spoke to them when they wouldn’t let a surveyor in because every time was inconvenient for them trying to find a solution. The agent just said they were told they wouldn’t be pushed on anything either.

It’s just incredibly frustrating at the moment. But they have been quite difficult on everything so far.

The waiting is the worst but out of your hands, your all done and just waiting on them.
If you feel you have lost interest then might be best to look for something else but it isn’t necessarily going to make the process any quicker.

Alexapissoff · 17/05/2021 13:52

I just get such an uneasy feeling from them.

The hold up on the indemnity policy is that they “can’t remember” what year they converted the garage and they don’t seem to want to be able to find out.

I’m losing patience with them to be honest.

Seem rather lazy then!
I would basically give them an scare and say you want this and this by x date otherwise no option to pull out.
Nothing wrong with putting the shits up them to make them get their finger out.
And if nothing happens look for something else, things like this can make you fall out of love with the house your buying.

Alexapissoff · 17/05/2021 14:02

Like I said, they told their solicitor to tell ours that if we talk about dates or push for one in anyway they are taking the house off the market.

So that’s where we stand on that.

I’ve been looking all the way though, nothing else suitable so far.

I've just withdrawn from a purchase. It was represented by the agent as chain free as the seller would go in to rental, so ordered searches and had a survey done, only to be told the day after that the seller needed to buy another house to port her mortgage, but that she was looking at loads of properties. So I waited. And waited. Two months later and things are tight my end - my buyer wants to settle dates and I need to start finding a rental if my purchase wasn't going to coincide. So I sent an email to sellers EA that if I completed before stamp duty deadline I'd be happy to reimburse for any mortgage penalties or towards a rental, and the reply just that seller was really trying to find a place but would not go in to rental. Another time passes and then her ea sent me a listing! So I wrote and specifically asked for reassurance that the seller was still selling. It was quite a heartfelt email. Got a two line email back saying seller had no luck so far and if I wanted to view the listing to get in touch! My lawyer also said she'd had nothing for a month from the seller.
So I found another house, not ideal, but at least it really is chain free. Probably going to miss the deadline anyway though.
I wish the seller had been straight up front. I'd invested alot emotionally as well as financially in the purchase, and rather than just stopping answering queries had just said she wasn't going to move.

If I was elected into Government then one of the first things I would do is overhaul the English system of house buying and selling. I have bought and sold too many times to mention but it still never ceases to amaze me just how utterly stressful it is, and thats just the straightforward ones - add in a nob head or two and you're shafted!!

Alexapissoff · 18/05/2021 11:00

It really does need an overhaul. It’s so frustrating at every turn.

I just don’t understand why they said they were buying a chain free property and that they wanted everything to be as fast as possible when actually that’s not the case. And they are messing around trying to remember what decade (!) they did conversation work.

I feel for you. They have misled you throughout.
I think you should pull out as they don't sound committed to selling at all. I wouldn't be surprised if they took it off the market themselves. There will be something else for you even if it takes more time.

Someone who was actually interested in selling their property wouldn't make threats like this 'they told their solicitor to tell ours that if we talk about dates or push for one in anyway they are taking the house off the market.'

Alexapissoff · 18/05/2021 11:43

I know. It’s all so mad.

We’re not pulling out yet because we’re already a couple of grand down if we do. We’ll hang on. Many because there is just nothing else suitable. I’ve been looking all the way though as nothing is guaranteed in life abs seen nothing I’d even consider.

OP posts:
stuckinaditch · 18/05/2021 12:02

It's understandable that you don't want to pull out if there is nothing else that suits you at the moment. However, there is also the sunken cost fallacy with regards your survey costs, etc. I would definitely continue to look as the sellers don't sound at all reliable.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 18/05/2021 12:07

I'd be looking at pulling out in the basis they lied and they have been totally unreasonable all the way through in a high-handed manner that does not indicate they've any intention of selling. Something else will come up.

Heronwatcher · 18/05/2021 12:09

Sorry but I think you might need to start adjusting your thoughts to the fact that the seller might have got cold feet and doesn’t want to sell the house that much. They sound like utter time wasters and like they have no desire to sell, quickly or slowly. If I were you I’d be looking at other properties at the very least, not spending any more money on the rental and also trying to sort the rental out.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 18/05/2021 12:10

If there are neighbouring houses you'd consider, even though they are not for sale, I'd consider asking whether any of the neighbours would consider selling to you and saving on the EA fees.
