Higgledy Piggledy Flooring dilemma (with diagram)

We have just built and extension and are refurbing the whole downstairs. I HATE mis-matched flooring - stopping and starting all over the place, but.... We have a hallway of Victorian tiles, staircase with central runner, then off to the left of the hall a Front living room and then at the end of the hall , utility to the left, loo to the right and then the extension.

SO I have been trying to find an engineered oak that suits all rooms (apart from hall) and I am struggling because I like a slightly warmer one for the living room and a cooler/lighter/greyer one in the kitchen.

But then I will entering higgledy piggledy land I think. It might be ok because the living room never 'meets' the extension, but I am still unsure.

Can anyone advise? I have to have the floor on site by next week. I currently have a bazillion samples, but can't find a one size fits all colour which would give me the flow.....

I think as the areas are quite clearly zoned and separated by walls and the Victorian tiles you can have different flooring without it looking higgledy piggledy. Keep the back of the house the same and have a different floor in the living room.

I think the higgledyness might come from the fact that you're planning on using the same materials for both.

If you used carpet for living room and wood for kitchen that would be fine, but wood for both I think they eye would want both to be the same colour. How wedded to the oak are you for both?

steppemum · 17/05/2021 22:58

I agree, 2 colours of wood will clash.
But carpet and one wood woudl work.
But also think you need to have a colour palette, so they are all in the same zone, that will give you the continuity

We are about to do something similar and I am going to have the same wood throughout, although I might go for 'original' Victorian tiles in the hall, dependent on the cost (they seem very expensive). I have no issues with having the same warmth/ wood throughout though.

Also, I am very indecisive and having one flooring throughout means I can accessorise and decorate with the same things, which makes it easier for me to process.

SlightlyJaded · 18/05/2021 09:52

I am SO indecisive @mobear. I currently have about 20 wood samples all over the floor. We are tipping over them endlessly but I can't find a one colour fits all!

The kitchen feels like it should be light and move towards the grey, but the living room needs to be warmer I think?

Those of you with one colour throughout - what kind of tone do you have please?

We’re going to go with an unfinished larch or oak wood with something like Osmo Raw Oil which should mean it’s neither cool nor warm. Paint wise I’m thinking Little Green Slaked Like which again I think is quite neutral.

Can you match the hall tiles to the utility and the toilet? I don't think it would matter then that the extension wood differs from the living room wood.

SlightlyJaded · 19/05/2021 09:38

I've got myself into frozen rabbit mode. First world problems and all that, but I can't decide!

We are refurbing the whole house and I"ve been really quick and decisive with everything, but this has turned out to be my nemesis. I really want to try and keep one colour everything is either too orange/too pink/too greige/too washed out.

@SwedishEdith
No, not really - loo at a push but they are not suitable for utility.

I think i agree with you.

Colours so far are:

Hallway walls - Little Greene Bone China Blue
Woodwork - F&B Railings

Front Room - F&B Oval room blue

Kitchen - F&B Pink Ground

Utility - not sure
Loo - not sure.
