Please help my choose my flooring....by tonight!

So we are in the middle of buying our forever home; it’s a newbuild, but unfortunately we are out of the country at the moment and I am doing all the spec from thousands of miles away.

I need to choose the flooring by the end of the day. I’ve settled on a light beige carpet for the upstairs and the lounge. But the downstairs is going to be done in wood-effect LVT.

There is a massive entrance hallway (south facing) which then leads on to a kitchen/family room and dining room across the back (north facing).

We are having cream shaker-style units in the kitchen with a wood laminate worktop (they’re not the nicest worktops but it’s all we can afford - they’re quite stripey and a sort of oak effect).

I want a contrast with the worktops, otherwise I think it will look odd. I was originally going to find a pale, but warm oak effect floor; but now I’ve really fallen in love with a much darker floor, which I adore but my Mum says will make the house look too dark. However, I think it will look nice against our mostly white furniture and the cream kitchen, and I think the house, rooms and hallway are all big enough to take dark colour.

Please help me decide! I’ll try and post some photos, although I’ve never done this before, so please bare with me.

The photos I’ve attached to this post are the showhome (identical to ours), showing the hallway (south facing) and the kitchen diner (north facing).

And this attached is an Instagram post showing exactly the same kitchen as the one we are having - cream shaker units with the striped wood laminate worktop.

This is the flooring that I love the most (taken from the visualiser on the flooring manufacturer‘s website - not our house pictured)

And this is the flooring that my head (and my mum!) think we should choose (a light, warm oak):

I think your head and your mum are right. I don't think the dark floor would tie in well at all with the cream shaker and the mid-tone worktops, and would be dark in a north facing room.

Sorry!

I’m with your head and your Mum. It will look light and fresh. The dark one is far too overpowering for me and will make the rooms seem smaller.

espressoontap · 17/05/2021 13:02

Yes that first floor is far too dark. Defo go with your head & mum.

Goodtohear · 17/05/2021 13:07

Head and your mum. I've just had lvt put in downstairs and so glad I went for a lighter one.

justanotherneighinparadise · 17/05/2021 13:08

Don’t go dark. Warm wood colour is the way to go.

ew1990 · 17/05/2021 13:09

We've got dark flooring and I hate it, makes the downstairs look really small and no matter how much I clean it it always looks dirty

feesh · 17/05/2021 13:10

Fab, thanks for the unanimous opinions - it makes it easier! I'll save the dark stuff for the upstairs bathroom (which has white tiles).

Yeah the light one will be much nicer with your units and worktop. It will also be much more forgiving in terms of keeping it clean.

CausingChaos2 · 17/05/2021 13:13

With the main living areas being north facing, definitely go for the lighter wood. The dark wood needs bright rooms to avoid it looking gloomy.

idontlikealdi · 17/05/2021 13:15

Def the lighter one.

TokyoSushi · 17/05/2021 13:18

Yep, definitely the lighter one!

friendlycat · 17/05/2021 23:21

Well that definitely was unanimous. Hope you got it sorted. Good luck with your move and new home.
