Has anyone ever had a large tree removed from their garden?

We are moving to a house that has some verrry large trees in the garden and sadly, I think we are going to have 1 or 2 removed as they are a little too close to the house. I'm just wondering how much this is going to cost? A lot, perhaps? Maybe someone here has had this done?

I don't yet know what type of trees they are - all different. Not near any cables - one is nearish the house/shed, the others are at the back of the garden but I'd still want one or two taken away as they are sooo big that they take away quite a bit of light! I just need a really rough idea. We'll probably get our survey back soon and I fully expect this issue to come up therein ...

My parents just had a very very large beech tree removed ...I don't know how tall exactly but more than twice the height of the house. It was large when they moved in in 1976. It cost just under £1000.

My PIL's had to have some big trees taken down but it was done through insurance because they had caused severe cracks in the house.

Just one thing I will say is whoever takes them down for you, get them to check for nests and any other wildlife in the trees.
The gut my MIL had did not check and ended up breaking the necks of a nest of baby birds

My husband did ours himself, huge poplar tree, not too near the house but was blocking a lot of light and lots of the sun from the garden. We still have the stump at the moment but it was relatively easy to take down.

Oh, how about the birds - thanks for that tip.

We had half a ginormous willow tree removed and a cypress taken out - took the men about 6 hours in total to remove, chop and shred the trees, leaving no evidence, not even roots. Cost £300, last year in Essex

My DH removed a large conifer himself. Cutting it down was easy, but removing the stump took many hours of digging and hacking, over a period of weeks.

we cut down a 40ft laylandaii (sp?) in our back garden ourselves, well, dh did with the help of a friend. it went in stages, using a small chain saw and ropes tied to each branch. we got it down to about 12ft of trunk, then down to just a stump which dh dug out during the summer. it's left quite a large hole which now needs filling though, but wasn't as difficult as we thought it was going to be. worst part was getting rid of all the off cuts, some we hired a chipper and chipped, some we've chopped p for logs to burn and the rest went to the tip, took about 20 trips though
