Recommend a range cooker?

Does anyone have a range cooker they would recommend? My ideal would have 5 gas hobs really well spaced out and one of the two ovens at least 60cm wide. The space to fill is 110cm. (I know lots of people prefer stacked ovens now but I don't want to give up worktop space)

I have a Rangemaster and love it. It is 110cm with 5 gas hobs, a fan oven, standard oven, grill and hotplate. It was here when I moved in and is 18 years old and still in very good condition. It's so much more solid than other standard cookers or oven and hob I have had which don't last long and it's great for big meals. I will replace like for like when I get a new kitchen.

NotMeNoNo · 18/05/2021 21:57

We had a gas Rangemaster classic of 1999 vintage, (blue) it only had 4 burners plus a hotplate but it was such a workhorse. The door rack with roasting tin attached was brilliant. I'd buy another if I had the space to fill- loads available second hand in if you are bargain hunting. The ovens are both a good size on the 110s.

@TobyHouseMan

I have a SMEG 150cm range - their top model.

I've had to fix this thing more times than I can count. The build quality is not great. But looks great.

The SMEGs look amazing and are well priced but I was put off by all the terrible reviews saying exactly what you've told us here. Rangemaster seems to be a safer bet.
backinthebox · 20/05/2021 16:29

I have a Smeg. You couldn’t pay me to say anything nice about it. The glass falls out of the doors regularly because the clips holding it in are poor quality and the door seals are equally rubbish. It has a fan on it that makes a racket for ages after you’ve switched the oven off. The ovens burn stuff on one side while leaving it undercooked on the other. I’ve had it repaired frequently but it still keeps breaking in the same places. We’ve had it about 2 and a half years, I can’t wait for it to wear out so I can replace it. We had a Britannia before - fab cooker, very solid. We went for the Smeg because my DH wanted solid-feeling hob knobs! 🙄 I used to have a Smeg retro fridge too which was similarly rubbish (door seals and noisy operation) but I managed to sell it on - I wouldn’t ever have another Smeg appliance. They are very much style over substance.

If you like the Lancanche ones, (but beware the are too big for our size units) then the Rangemaster Elise is what you want!!

Here is one www.instagram.com/p/B8tJ9czhES3/
and another www.instagram.com/p/B2ltzYHhg6j/

I have one, and chose it because it doesn't have doors at the front to go brown and filthy, and I love the cross head knobs which are a copy of Lancanche ones. Comes in some lovely colours too. The second oven on the left is also a fan oven, so you get 2 fan ovens, where some of the others the left hand one is just a normal non-fan one which takes forever to heat up and cook anything.

cungryhow · 20/05/2021 17:12

I’ve also got a rangemaster Elise (in cherry red) and love it. Had a stoves before which had the silver paint peeling off the knobs, a grill door which wouldn’t close and one oven not working at all after 5 years.

MrsRLynde · 20/05/2021 17:22

Had an induction Rangemaster that was fabulous, but parts became unobtainable, which curtailed it's life Sad. On a tighter budget now, so have a well-priced Belling induction (with better reviews than Smeg etc). So far so good...

DanielleandBobby · 20/05/2021 17:51

Rangemaster Professional Deluxe 100cm dual fuel with five gas burners including a wok burner which is fierce!

I love both ovens: the left hand one is big enough for a big turkey/large roast, and the slimmer right hand oven has four movable shelves which are great for cooking multiple pizzas, lots of side dishes, several sponges etc. There’s also a plate warming rack.

I love the oven and will be buying another one hopefully when we move house later this year (fingers crossed!). If there are any negatives, it’s that the grill only has one level and the grill pan is quite close to the element, meaning that you can’t grill anything very high. But I still recommend it wholeheartedly.

SpeakingFranglais · 20/05/2021 19:51

I’ve had a Rangemaster and the build quality was crap, it looked good for a couple of years but it was disappointing.

I’ve now got an Italian Ilve Milano and the build is amazing, it’s so strong, easy to clean and well built. The doors are solid,, the top stainless steel,, the pan stands cast iron and small enough to go in the dishwasher. It’s got numerous settings and a rotisserie.

Wasn’t cheap but if you cook it’s fab.

SwedishEdith · 20/05/2021 20:32

I've got a John Lewis (which is a Smeg) which is a 6 burner and absolutely fine as a cooker. It's free replacement upgrade from one I got half price in their clearance sale which was crap and, I think, was an AEG. Fortunately, that was covered by the 3 year guarantee. We've had this one for 7 years.

However, if I was redoing a kitchen now, I wouldn't have an oven I need to bend down for to get stuff out again.

charliechew · 20/05/2021 20:42

I’m on my second Rangemaster Elan, an induction one, can’t recommend them enough. The only got rid of the first one (ceramic) as I wanted an induction hob, which was after 14 years. I had a black one first and then got an olive one, best range ever. Still looked great after 14 years.

SnowWouldHelp · 20/05/2021 21:56

I really like the colours of the Elise! I do cook a lot though so should try not to be too swayed by that alone Grin

I have a Stoves one. It has seven burners (I've never used them all at the same time but it's good as you can space stuff out). There are three average sized burners, two small, one large and one extra large (good for a wok or paella pan). It has a removable cast iron griddle which is pretty good.

There are two reasonable sized ovens but not huge and definitely not 60cm, more like 50cm (can def fit a turkey or large roast), and I find this much better than one large one as you can obviously have them at different temperatures which is excellent for Yorkshire puddings and also useful for eg cooking a pudding or cake while making the main meal. There is also a grill which can also be used as a small oven and a warming oven for plates, slow cooking & keeping things warm. This makes fantastic stew.

The only thing that has broken in about 12 years is that one of the knobs has gone a bit loose. It works fine. I will get round to replacing it at some point! I cook a lot and it definitely gets pretty heavy usage.

BigusBumus · 21/05/2021 06:54

@SnowWouldHelp I cook a lot too and the Elise has really held up to every day cooking, sometimes 3 times a day for 5 adult people. (Kids are young adults, men who eat a bodybuilders diet😫).

Love my blue one (that's actually my kitchen in the second link I posted up thread). Like I said there I don't want to be cleaning it the whole time so I specifically looked for one with no windows. Plus I wanted more of an Aga look. It was between that and the Aga Masterchef XL which was more expensive but also has no windows, but it might have been discontinued. www.appliancecity.co.uk/cooking/range-cookers/dual-fuel-range-cookers/aga-masterchef-mdx110dfpas-masterchef-deluxe-110cm-dual-fuel-range-cooker-122100-pearl-ashes/?awin=639029

SnowWouldHelp · 22/05/2021 08:10

That's super helpful, thanks. I like idea of being able to see inside but as I've managed without so far, I don't suppose I need it.
The rubbish weather this month is swaying me back towards the Everhot which would be perfect for about 9 months of the year and a waste the other 3.

OP posts:
LoudestCat14 · 22/05/2021 08:30

We looked at Rangemasters and were really put off by the grill pan as its attached and very shallow, so you're lucky to get a slice of bread under it, let alone sausages or a dish that needs browning. Plus the quality of them in general didn't feel like it matched the price. We went for a Belling after reading other recommendations on here and I love it.

Firkinhavinalaugh · 23/05/2021 07:53

The Everhot us the only oven I considered swapping my Lacanche for! I believe you can turn the front off, whereas with an Aga, you turn all of it off (and in some cases need a second oven!)
Really good luck :)

Chimpd0g · 23/05/2021 08:52

I also have the Stoves one mentioned above. I wouldn’t go for one again, personally:-

  1. it’s way hotter than other ovens so makes following a recipe annoying
  2. no light in the larger oven to see inside
  3. the knobs - the coating has come off a few of them and looks almost like it’s a sticker that’s got air bubbles underneath and coming off, and also some of them have got a bit stiff
PresentingPercy · 23/05/2021 10:35

Honestly!!! All these ranges have problems! I have a Miele built in oven. I would never ever swap that for one of these ovens and ranges described above. I have a Miele 4 zone induction hob and that’s a gem too. Do yourself a favour and realise you don’t need more than 4 rings on a wide hob (90 cm) and you certainly don’t need a range cooker that breaks down! Buy something worth buying!

MrsBarnstable · 23/05/2021 11:07

How lovely for you @PresentingPercy 🙄 but the OP asked for advice on range cookers
I have a miele built in oven too. Can't remember the last time I used it

PresentingPercy · 23/05/2021 14:16

Yes I know but sometimes people have not evaluated the best alternatives. Why buy a range cooker when poster after poster says they have issues. They are style over substance and Smeg are totally guilty of this. Why not use your Miele cooker? How odd. I would recommend mine to anyone. It’s close to perfect but it was not cheap. I don’t see how having a wide induction hob with oven under loses work top either? Gas hobs are very unsteady and all that cleaning!!!

IseeScottishhills · 23/05/2021 15:17

I have a gas Falcon pro or something similar and a Rangemaster 110cm pro deluxe induction with all the bells and whistles the Falcon beats the Rangemaster hands down, the build quality is significantly better on the Falcon 6 years old it looks as good as new and its very heavily used and not cared for overly well. The Rangemaster is just over a year old and hasn't been heavily used, has been meticulously cared for and I very much doubt it will still be looking as good as the Falcon in 5 year time.

MrsBarnstable · 23/05/2021 15:17

@PresentingPercy, but that's like someone asking for advice about getting a dog and you replying oooh get a cat instead. It has no relevance to the question
I've had no issues with my stove range, it has every I need. I did my homework thoroughly before I got it
My miele is wonderful, I just get more use from my range

PresentingPercy · 23/05/2021 15:45

Well if they have not considered all the walking a dog needs and the grooming, a cat is a better option. As is a decent oven and hob!

Twinkie01 · 23/05/2021 16:07

None which have anything to do with Glen Dimplex. Their customer service is shocking. We had to wait 3 months for our induction hob on our Britannia range cooker to be fixed. Ours is Britannia by the way, oven door glass has blown completely shattering everywhere, fan has gone twice and we've spent over £1k having different bits of the induction job replaced.

When it breaks again we're reverting to an Aga with gas.
