Hello Mummies,

DH and I are planning on buying property in Ashford Kent, basically because of the secondary schools there.
We however, have no idea which areas are good for family and was hoping to get some much needed pointers 🙂..
Thank you in advance

Post on the chat board - you’ll reach a wider audience.

I have no idea about properties or schools in Ashford but the designer outlet is good!

tortoiselover100 · 27/05/2021 22:15

Yes secondary schools in ash ford kent is not my specialist subject. I'm out.

CoronaBanana · 27/05/2021 22:36

Yes @Ifraaiza post again in 'Chat' or on the 'local' board.
MN is a big place and threads can get lost in the ether.

musicalfrog · 27/05/2021 22:46

It's a national board too, you might be better off finding a local fb group to that area.

Blimey, that's a bit harsh OP! I could advise you to move to Godington, Beaver Green or Kennington if you want a recommendation, but to be honest I really wouldn't listen to me as I have NO knowledge of Ashford, have NEVER been there and literally just picked those three names off Google maps. So although I'm a regular user of this board, I would say it was more helpful for me NOT to respond - which I didn't, initially.

Perhaps try posting in a local board, or in Chat, or hopefully this "bump" will bring it back into active threads and someone more local might spot it.

We live in one of the villages around Ashford now, having moved down from.London in late 2019. I'm not familiar with all areas but will happily answer questions where I can. Secondary schools are so not my area of expertise (yet) as DD ist only just coming up to primary age.

hmm , perhaps work on your attitude before you introduce yourself to the neighbours

goldenlilliesdaffodillies · 28/05/2021 12:24

I know Ashford very well. Every spare bit of green space and surrounding farm land is being built upon. There are huge developments going up all over the place. County lines is a big issue due to the easy proximity to London. There are some very deprived areas, particularly on the south side. The town centre is really run down. The opposite end (eg areas around Kennington) is OK.
Personally I would move to one of the nearby villages which are lovely. It's really competitive to get into the Grammar Schools and the choice if you don't is not great.
I guess it depends where you are moving from though.
On the plus side the railway system makes it easy to get to places.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 28/05/2021 12:26

What @goldenlilliesdaffodillies said.

Ashford itself is a shithole

BooksChocolateAndSleep · 28/05/2021 12:31

What @goldenlilliesdaffodillies said. Ashford really isn't a great area and I wouldn't want to live there!

Cattitudes · 28/05/2021 22:35

Not sure many people move to Ashford for the secondary schools to be honest.

This. Ashford is pretty grim tbh. As another PP said, every single spare bit of land is being built on, there's lots of run down areas and I wasn't aware there were any excellent secondaries in the area.
Fullofpudding · 28/05/2021 22:41

Nobody has commented because they didn't want to tell you how much of a shit hole Ashford is!!

CatkinToadflax · 29/05/2021 12:23

My brother lives in the area, but in a village much nearer to Tenterden (which is lovely) than Ashford (which really isn’t). He doesn’t have children so I can’t comment on the schools immediately local to Ashford. I live in the next county over and have school aged children, so do know a bit about the schools in the wider area, and as far as I’m aware Ashford isn’t known as a local hotspot for brilliant education. Other areas of Kent have better reputations.

FizzyPink · 29/05/2021 12:25

They call it Trashford for a reason. The designer outlet is really the only thing it has going for it aside from proximity to the Eurostar for a long weekend in Paris

CandyLeBonBon · 29/05/2021 17:22

Eynsford is far nicer

Keepyourdistance000 · 29/05/2021 17:28

Where is Ash Ford? Do you mean Ashford?

SJaneS49 · 29/05/2021 19:40

Ashford attracts younger families & people on a lower income as its properties are cheaper and as above, it’s got good commuter links to London. It is over built up though and as others have said, a complete sh*thole.

Eynsford mentioned above is nowhere near Ashford. It’s gorgeous but packed out every warm weekend & summer holidays with visitors from Swanley who ruin it a bit.

121hugsneeded · 29/05/2021 22:17

Yeah I couldn't get excited about moving to Ashford. It's a bit meh. Parts of it i wouldn't walk in on my own, day or night. Wouldn't really want to bring kids up here.

I remember it well (not from Swanley though)

I live in one of the lovely villages just outside Ashford. I try to avoid going to Ashford as much as I can it's pretty grotty to be honest and the only half decent shop in the centre, Debenhams, has now closed. Ashford doesn't even have an M&S in the town centre anymore.

My DS went to the grammar school in Ashford - Norton Knatchbull. It was ok up until year 11 then 6th form was rubbish. He had 6 physics teachers over the two years with one teaching A level physics via You Tube! There is a different headteacher now so it may have improved but I certainly wouldn't move so my DC could go there. The girls' grammar, Highworth, is much better I believe.

Sorry to join this tread to ask about something different. However it’s the only recent one I’ve seen that to talk about Kent.

My boyfriend and I are a young black couple (in our 20s), Who are looking to purchase a home in Kent ( Wainscott , Strood, Rochester (Open to suggestions)). We are very interested to see if other people have moved from London ( east and North) to these areas and how they found it.

We are also very interested in finding out where the ‘not so nice areas’ are in the places listed above, if any. And the opinions of any young couple and or people from an ethnic minority.

Thanks
