How would you make this oddly shaped living space work?

How would you make this narrow and oddly shaped "L" shaped living room/dining room work? What would you do for the short term to make it work and in the long term?

Other people on the development have knocked through the kitchen to dining space but the living area is still odd to me.

Is the door on the top right of the sittingroom a door to the under stairs cupboard?

If so I would block it up and create a new door to the under stairs behind the kitchen door. Then you could use it as a pantry in the kitchen. And it would make that corner of the sittingroom more useable.

Top left sorry 😫... had too much Wine last night

Moonshine11 · 16/05/2021 11:25

Similar layout to ours, our kitchen dinner is also knocked through.
Difference is we don’t have the wall separating stairs to the living room.
This has opened the space up so much!
My friend couple doors up has the same wall as you and tbh she has a lot of lost space.
We have a door when the WC ends into the living area and stairs infront.
Hope this makes sense 😂

Hallyup6 · 16/05/2021 12:09

We had a similar layout in our last house, although our stairs were the other way around. We had a small hallway with wall directly in front of the front door, toilet off to one side, then door to the lounge on the other, opposite the toilet door. Stairs in the lounge, opened up underneath. We had that as an office area/kids' crap storage area, but basically the lounge went the width of the house. We also combined the kitchen and dining room to make one big room.

OnceUponAThread · 16/05/2021 13:27

I'd knock through the dining room and kitchen if you can.

I'd also have the front door opening into the living room and get rid of that pointless hallway that's sucking space. (Though I know that's not for everyone as some people like an "entrance")

justanotherneighinparadise · 16/05/2021 13:30

We have an l shaped living room and don’t find it odd at all.

mayblossominapril · 16/05/2021 13:34

I would put the kitchen in the front where the living room is and knock the existing kitchen and dining room into one to form a nice shaped living room.

Daisy829 · 16/05/2021 13:35

I don’t think the living space at the front is odd but I would definitely knock the kitchen into the dining space. I’d be tempted to take out the wall from the front door too as pp suggested. I’d probably want to find a way to have something fitted on the wall on the left as you come in for coat/shoe storage.

MildredPuppy · 16/05/2021 13:36

Can you just zone the space?
Put a couple of nice chairs and a coffee table for reading near the light at the front (or a play bit) then in the wider bit with less light put a tv watching area so a corner sofa opposite a tv You might lose access to the understairs cupboard depending on where tge sofa went.

PickAChew · 16/05/2021 13:38

That narrow bit is very narrow but I'd use that as a snug/TV area with a small sofa crosswise from the right hand wall to square it off a bit. A dresser or shelving unit would make good use of the wall at the side of the stairs.

Happyoldbat · 16/05/2021 13:43

I would do what Mayblossom suggested.

I love this idea. My friend’s house has this and it’s brilliant.

Where are you going to put coats and shoes? I would use that corner for storage

Alternista · 16/05/2021 13:51

I’d make the hall smaller- just a square lobby, and take the rest of that wall down to make the living room bigger and more rectangular. Then I’d put a built in tall cupboard at the bottom of the stairs to store coats and shoes in.

Wouldn't this leave the cloakroom in the corner of the living room though? Envy
givememarmite · 16/05/2021 13:55

I would section the reception room off to make a small living room at the front. Then open up a corridor to the kitchen, knock through the kitchen & dining room and put doors from dining are into garden (assuming the garden is around the back of the house and not just to the side).
I'd split what is left of the reception room to have a utility/cloakroom with access from the hall and the other side full height cupboards/pantry for storage in the kitchen.
Like this (excuse the very professional drawing!)

Also, I would close off the large space between the front & back (maybe with internal glass bifolds if you want to be able to open the space up at any point if you have lots of people round) and I would install a door to the left going from the lounge to kitchen. I say this because in our house we had to walk right through the middle of the lounge to the kitchen every time we were bringing shopping in and it used to really annoy me. The lounge felt like a walk through rather than a nice place to sit.

RainingZen · 16/05/2021 15:09

Depending where the radiators are, and how easy it may be to move the TV points, I would:

Build a small off-center porch at the front.
Reduce the hall so it's just a little access area.
Bring the stairs into the living room and feature them.
Use an L shaped sofa to zone the living area.
Put a sideboard behind the sofa, to create more storage. Then use the little square snug area, which will be full of light, either as a play or office area. For myself, I'd put a lovely armchair by that window, some shelves opposite.

Not knowing where the radiators are now is a pain though as it's hard to plan.

I would completely remodel.

I would put a kitchen in the front of what is now the living room and a dining table in the larger part. I would then knock through what is now the kitchen and living room and make that the main living space with tri fold doors opening into the garden

I’d have one end with a sofa and TV and the other end with more seating so maybe for good for reading or not watching TV. Either way around would work by the looks of it.

Short term custom cupboards and space saving furniture.

Long term knock that toilet out if it’s the second one in the house and shorten the porch. Put a door closer to the stairs in the living room.

Personally. Put a washing machine under the stairs and put a dishwasher where the washing machine was. Make an office/workshop from the dining room.

Fancifully I would see if the attic was a room or make it so and see if a basement was possible.

Id like to add to the fanciful a bit more and put a porch on the front so that when the hallway is taken out it doesn’t leave much of a draft.
