Very narrow master bedroom

Hi there-we’re buying a house in a lovely village with great facilities. It’s a 1930s house that’s had a 2 storey extension meaning the main en-suite bedroom is over the garage and is only 8 ft (2.4m) wide-although 17ft in length. Can anyone help me with ideas for layout and furnishing as I’m beginning to panic now! We can’t possibly fit our king size bed in there so will have to go for a double. Is there any way we can furnish and decorate it so it won’t look like a corridor? Anyone else done it?

You could have a bed and sitting area? Or turn one end into cupboards?

chestnutmares · 15/05/2021 19:07

Where are the windows and the door? I think we need a diagram!

What have the current owners done?

revampneeded · 15/05/2021 19:11

Step one for me would be a big mirror, OP. Opens the space right up (well, visually, anyway...)

Why would you need to go for a double?

Our old bedroom was 18ft x 10, but we had a 4m run of ikea pax wardrobes along one long wall (door took up the rest of that wall) so floor space very similar. Our bed (superking) was smack in the middle of one long wall. At the time we sold we had a nice vintage dressing table at one end and a desk (wfh) at the other end and it really didn't feel like a corridor.

Where are the door(s) and window(s)? In our case that was a limitation as the window was in the middle of one short wall and radiator on the other

I would keep the king sized bed, and put it at one end with 2 (narrow) spaces either side. At least to start with.

Then a small sofa/blanket box at the bottom of the bed, with cupboards in that end of the room.

Our bedroom is a weird L shape and we have a king size bed in an area that is 2.4m wide. Have two small bedside tables either side and it's fine.

We have a narrow master. We have everything along one wall like

Bedside table. bed Bedside table. Wardrobe. Wardrobe

With a chest of drawers opposite a wardrobe on the other side

It works because our door is in a corner though (opposite the second wardrobe)

Would that work for you?

You have room for a king size at one end with small bedside tables either side. Might be awkward if you're big or have a bed with a foot, though.

Actually bed style matters a lot - we went from a wooden framed double to a divan superking and the overall length didn't actually change due to the lack of footboard.

Oh gosh, how do you do a diagram? I’ve tried to upload a photo but it’s not playing. Basically, there is window at narrow end then about 15ft it narrows to 2.1 m with door coming in then other door to lovely en-suite. Opposite end to window.

We have two bedrooms that are 9 foot- something by 17. One has a king size bed in with space to pull out under bed drawers on both sides.
