What shape is it? Could you just cover with another layer of fabric?

Nookable · 13/05/2021 13:26

I think most dyes are for soaking fabrics in. Plus is the fabric just dirty or stained? It's best to dye clean fabric and if there any stains dye can just make it more obvious.

Have you got photos of the footstool? Possibly you could recover/reupholster it

Might be easier to buy a staple gun and a bit of fabric.

Any chance of unstapling/ungluing the fabfic?

washing then dying would be best.

Easiest is to stuck new fabric over the top, but you need to get a vax type nachine to clean first

It’s got buttons and pleats so re covering would be a shame. It’s not encrusted with filth, just a bit grubby.

I’ve just seen people painting sofas with chalk paint Shock but I’m not sure I’m brave enough for that

Crazily, I hadn’t thought of getting the vax on it, which would have been an obvious first step so I’m going to try that first

Chalk paint! My mum has a thing for buying second hand furniture and "upcycling" it with chalk paint. It does really work, covers well and dries soft. Could you test it on the underneath bit of the footstool to check you like it first?

hennybeans · 13/05/2021 16:30

Sorry, just to specify, my mum buys fabric furniture to use chalk paint on. I know it's most common to use it over wood, etc. But it does work on fabric too.

You get in situ fabric dye. However getting a professional upholstery cleaner in is a good first step. It’s usually the same guys as do the carpets. Make sure it’s not just some dude with a rug doctor though a d ask on your local face book page for recommendations.

Those tie dye kits you buy on Amazon for kids have dyes you squeeze on to the fabric rather than having to soak it. Although you are supposed to wash the dye out afterwards!

I spray-dyed an armchair, with this, and it looked new.
