Long narrow kitchen

We are extending and remodelling the ground floor of our house. Due to budget and location of existing walls, our builder is proposing a 2.6x6m kitchen diner. This feels too narrow to me (I wanted at least 3m wide) but he thinks this would be a good size room.

I don't want an island or peninsula (just a u-shape is fine) but would welcome thoughts on these dimensions. If anyone has pictures of a similar size kitchen/diner, that would also be amazing!

Will you walk through the kitchen to get to the dining area, instead of the other way round? If so, it's doable as you don't need the dining area to also act as a walk way when people are sitting at the table.

The minimum space at each end of a table - where you don't need it to function as a walk way - is 90cm. So if you got an 80cm wide table that would just about work. But you could look at getting a table with built in seating against one wall, as that would give you a bit more room on the other side.

Ideally you would have a bit more width, but if you design it well I think you'd be ok at 2.6.

Just measured the narrow part of mine and 2.6m is definitely wide enough.

Thanks @msgloria @SwedishEdith that's really reassuring.

Here's a rough floor plan I've mocked up, luckily the door is in the middle so we wouldn't need to move around table to access the working part of the kitchen.

It's worth just playing about with the table configuration. I found a random quite petite four seater table on the Next website that is 135cm long and 80cm wide. If you pushed the short edge of the table up against Wall A, then you'd get 125cm of walk way on the other side, which is plenty. And if you bought an extending table you could seat more people for occasional use when it doesn't matter that it's a bit snug (setting aside COVID for the moment!).

It sounds narrow for the dining end. Beware those tables on diy planner are absolutely tiny. Good luck with it!

2.6 perfectly good for kitchen. We had a 2.4 galley in our last house and it was good. I'd have built in banquette seating as an L-shape and then chairs on the other 2 sides. That way you'll have plenty of room for a table for 6.
