Induction hob saucepans

I am thinking of replacing my gas hob with an induction one.

How do I know if my current saucepans will work on it? Will I need a whole new set? How about my Le Creuset pan?

I use Le Creuset and various cast iron skillets on my induction hob. All fine. The hob has acquired a couple of scratches but this was from other things not the cast iron.

The only thing I would say is that if you have any pan where the base is not quite flat - ie it’s warped a little - this will be really noticeable with induction and only the bit that touches will heat up.

@alloverthecarpetagain

I'm just switching to an induction hob because of a house move. I'm worried that I will end up scratching the hob with all my old Le Creuset pans as they are all quite rough on the underside. Do the hobs scratch easily?
As it’s induction you could put down good quality kitchen paper on the hob first to reduce / prevent scratches

@PresentingPercy thank you for that advice, good to know. This is a whole new world for me as I've never even had an electric hob before, never mind one that works like this (no idea...) I feel I need a little spending spree in Ikea or John Lewis now.

alloverthecarpetagain · 13/05/2021 12:06

@GrumpyHoonMain really? That works? That is so amazing! I do have a couple of big Le Creuset casserole dishes that I'd hate to get rid of as they are just the right size, so will try that definitely - thank you!

EastWestWhosBest · 13/05/2021 12:17

You can buy induction hob protectors from Lakeland.

Einszwei · 13/05/2021 12:26

I would never go for a full induction job again. It's great for very fast heating, but terrible for anything that requires the pan to be lifted from the hob.

I wish I still had a couple of gas burners.

CointreauVersial · 13/05/2021 14:24

Einszwei, what do you mean by "requires the pan to be lifted from the hob"? My pans are either on the hob, or off it!

muckypaws · 13/05/2021 14:36

@Eastwestwhosbest thank you, that's useful to know.

billyt · 13/05/2021 14:52

My Apple Watch has a metal strap with a magnet that holds it in place.

Comes in very handy when I need to know if the pot/pan I'm looking at in a shop will work with our induction.

It can be a pain in the arse though if I'm using cutlery that loves a magnet/ Many times I've lifted my hand and found a fork stuck to it! Grin

The Le Crueset hob to oven casserole dishes are brilliant and they are not heavy. Since having one of them I wouldn’t dream of luring cast iron le Crueset on the hob. If I’m using my big old cast iron ones, I just start off cooking on the hob in a deep frying pan. Then transfer. However their newer range are brilliant.

PresentingPercy · 13/05/2021 14:56

This style. They come in various sizes.

I have a mix of stainless steel and Le Creuset which all work well. The Le Creuset are very effective so keep an eye on temperature settings. I have two non stick pans that are a bit tricky though.

FuzzyPuffling · 13/05/2021 17:06

£130 FOR ONE SAUCEPAN?????????????

Bugger that, I'll have a gas hob. :)

I use my Le Creuset cast iron panel every day on my induction hob. No scratches, works brilliantly!

chipshopElvis · 13/05/2021 17:17

I also bought a load of cheapish pans from TK max with are brill, and then my hob came with a few free compatible pans and they are good too. Maybe it doesn't matter too much!

PresentingPercy · 13/05/2021 17:42

@FuzzyPuffling
Lots of the Le Crueset casserole dishes are over £200. This is the best hob to oven one in my view but can be found cheaper than the price quoted. However it is a once in a 30 year plus purchase. I have had my original cast iron casseroles for 35 years plus. You just do not replace them. If you have Le Crueset you must have known how much they cost so why the surprise?

FuzzyPuffling · 13/05/2021 17:43

I have one Le Creuset casserole dish. It was a wedding present 42 years ago.

Mine are Schulte Ufer. Came free with my Neff induction hob 6 years ago. Top notch and look like new, as does my hob. I was a reluctant induction purchaser, always had gas. So glad I made the change, you won't regret it.

FuzzyPuffling · 13/05/2021 18:57

Thank you fussychica. That's very heartening to hear.

I didn't buy my Le Creuset specifically for the induction hob. I've had them for absolutely years but it was great that I could still use them on this hob

doodleygirl · 13/05/2021 21:56

Asda have great pans for induction, brilliant prices

pickingdaisies · 14/05/2021 16:42

I love my induction hob, it's so easy to clean after my old pita gas hob. I'm surprised at the love for Le creuset, I can barely lift them even when empty. Although they do look lovely.

pickingdaisies · 14/05/2021 16:48

I have this. My old one lasted 15 years.

We have the Procook Professional pans. I've had them about 5 years now and they are still in really good shape. They were a set of 10 for about £320 if I remember correctly. I do recommend them although I find the larger pans quite heavy as they have a solid bottom (much like me Grin )

PresentingPercy · 14/05/2021 16:58

A bit like the Le Crueset cast iron ones!
