Roller blinds - cords.

We have recently bought a house which was "done" by the previous owner. It wasn't dressed for sale - they finished their renovation and for personal reasons had to sell up and move away.

When we viewed they explained that they just put cheap blackout roller blinds up at the windows in the bedrooms and other thinner ones downstairs.

We intend to put curtains/ shutters up etc but having spent a fortune on the house and the blinds doing the job for now we are going to save up and do them all next year.

The issue is the cords - they are all those plastic bobbly ones on a loop and one by one they are all breaking. I cannot now open / close some of them because the cords have snapped high up. I think DH is particularly heavy handed.

I do not want to spend a lot on replacing all the cords but I wondered whether I could get away with just buying some more of the connectors? Like this:

Or will I need to buy the whole chain and mechanism again?

Will the connectors keep breaking or make the chain snap again anyway?

Are the metal ones any better?

Any tips will be appreciated.

TIA

Depending how long the blinds/windows are you can use them with two free ends, you need to wind the roller blind up (off the window) and ensure the cord that will lower the blind is high up at the front, replace the blind without turning it, and you are done...pull the short cord and the blind will drop. It's best to sew/tie a bead or something on the end so no one can pull them right through the mechanism

and it does only work for fairly short windows.

Yeah, some of the windows are quite big and so that isn't really working.

My DS has just managed to pull the whole cord out of his blind 🙄 literally as I typed out my post.

The cords are usually pretty cheap to replace, of you get a long length of the cord and one of the snap links you mention. If you have several links then you increase the chances that the blind won't close (or possibly open) fully.

At least as a temporary measure, it should be reasonably straightforward to feed the end of the cord back in if it's come out. Just offer the end up and turn the blind by hand so it pulls the cord through.

Those connections will be fine- they are intended to break open as a safety feature.
