Private Water Supply - how often do you test?

I've just bought a house with a private water supply and it enters the house through a UV and filtration system. It's possible my solicitor dropped the ball on this when buying as I now think it should have been tested before the sale went through but it wasn't. However, it tastes good and it's very clean and soft (I hardly need to condition my hair anymore!) but I'm wondering if I should get it tested just for peace of mind.

If you have a private supply do you have it tested regularly?

In Scotland it has to be tested during the sale as part of the mortgage agreement.

Ours was tested before we completed and was crystal clear. We don't have a UV light and DH services it (replaces the granule things and the fluffy filter) as required, which isn't very often as its so clear.

We are now doing an extension and will be relocating the filters (outside instead of in the kitchen) are adding a UV filter plus a tank and pump to improve water pressure.

Scotland has a modernisation grant available via the council. This required a 'risk assessment' (predominantly the water test) beforehand. It cost £134.

So in answer to your question, twice in 3 years but only cos we had to. Both those tests have indicated the water is perfect so I will not test again unless I have a reason to do so.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm in Scotland so I think my solicitor f'd up on this. No problems with the mortgage though, so who knows what happened there.

The previous owner wasn't really a maintenance person it seems - we replaced the filter and one of them was truly disgusting, I don't think it can have been changed in years. Our water pressure improved significantly just from doing that, from a dribble to one of the best showers I've ever had! I don't know why she lived with such a rubbish pressure for so long!

I think my best bet is to get it checked, now it's in my head I won't be able to relax until it's done.

We have a private water supply (England) and have it tested annually via the local council. I think it's a legal requirement, although the woman who tests says that people will go to any lengths to avoid her! I'd rather get it checked for peace of mind.

I sold a house with private supply, also Scotland, and wasn’t asked to test it. I didn’t realise it was a requirement...
It’s not expensive and you can get grants for necessary upgrades.
