How to maintain wooden windows and doors ? Ensure no rot deformation etc

We have a Victorian terraced house with wooden windows in 2 bays (living room and master bedroom, both on the front of the house) then in two rooms on the top floor (both overlooking the back), and we also have a wooden front door.

All these windows and doors were here when we bought the place, so we have no idea who installed them and what specs they are.

My question is very simple: we know nothing about wood - what should we do/not do to maintain all this wood?

Should we call someone (who?) to... do what? Repaint the windows? Apply any kind of treatment? How often?

The windows and doors I mentioned seem OK. However, we are replacing a wooden French door because it is rotting; in all the other properties we lived in, we always had problems with wood: eg brand new windows expanding after heavy rains and getting stuck, etc. That's what we want to avoid.

Please note the question is not about the merits of wood vs other materials - that's a question I was discussing here:
