Kitchen tiles. What colour should I get

We finally have some movement on our kitchen, the fitter came this morning and it should be started in about 10 weeks.
I have chosen white gloss cabinets, we have pale blue walls and I am going for mid grey worktop and pale grey floor tiles.
I am not keen on metro tiles, although they do come in a wide range of colours.
I need tiles for above the worktop and below the cupboards.
I had considered the patterned ones like a Victorian or delft pattern, but think they will date.
I quite fancy orange or green, but DH disagrees.
Bowl me over with suggestions please

Delft tiles are timeless and would look great in the colour scheme you're planning.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/05/2021 17:18

I'm having the same dilemma. My walls are a really nice shade of lime green. That I'd like to keep. Do t want pattern or it will date.

Mydogisagentleman · 11/05/2021 17:22

@Toddlerteaplease we’ve just changed from green to blue.
My husband who has never expressed an interest in any decorating decisions and left the kitchen plan to me, said that he has always hated the colour of the walls.
I showed him 2 colours when we repainted and asked him to choose.
To be honest I would have been gutted if he had chosen cerise!

We went with a splashback for our kitchen instead of tiles. It's glass and we could pick any colour we wanted (we chose a very pale grey) I absolutely love it, it's so fresh and shiny and very easy to keep clean. Would that be an option for you?

Mydogisagentleman · 11/05/2021 17:32

@LifeInAHamsterWheel potentially, if it could go all around the walls under the units and behind the hob and sink etc.
I’ll look into it thank you

I'm designing our new kitchen at the moment and everything I'm reading / seeing is indicating that tiles are a bit passé.

I'm looking at upstands and a splashback either in the same material as the worktop (probably Dekton but maybe Quartz), or in glass.

BIWI · 11/05/2021 17:52

We have a glass splashback all the way round and it looks great.

We are currently designing our kitchen and I'm very tempted by stainless steel.splashbacks between the worktop and wall cupboards. Certainly looks easy to clean and I think will look great with our navy cupboards.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/05/2021 18:12

My friend keeps suggesting a glass splash back. Are they cheaper than tiling?

Zinnia · 11/05/2021 18:29

I really disagree about tiles being passé. The type of tile in fashion may vary (though as I said I think Delft as originally suggested by the OP is pretty timeless and would soften a white gloss kitchen nicely), but tiles in themselves are a standard/ classic kitchen surface. Zellige is massively in-style at the moment, for example, and encaustic has been around for some time now to the extent of potentially being on the way out now. Fishtail/ hexagonal/ shaped tiles are also on trend.

But kitchen choices should never be dictated by fashion if that's not what you want!

Zinnia · 11/05/2021 18:32

A quartz etc. upstand looks great but is £££. Tiles are a much more cost-effective means of getting the look you want.

Personally I'm not a fan of glass splashbacks but it's a matter of individual taste.

Changingwiththetimes · 11/05/2021 19:26

I like continuing the worktop up the walls. Makes for a very slick and clean look.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 11/05/2021 19:27

Our glass splashback is exactly like the photo upthread! But we have an upstand from the worktop and then the splashback. I love it Smile

Mydogisagentleman · 11/05/2021 20:17

I have a lot to think about thank you.
I don’t know what an upstand is, and I would urge the person thinking about stainless steel to reconsider.
IME, they mark horrendously

We used mirror metro tiles. It adds a lot of light in an already bright room and is a bit different from the usual metro colours/patterns.

Toomuchleopard · 11/05/2021 20:27

We have upstands made of the worktop material (quartz) and then just painted walls above so most of the kitchen there is no splash back. Behind the hob there is a quartz splash back same as worktops. The sink is in front of the window and the worktop goes up the wall and onto the window sill. Very easy to keep clean.

BIWI · 11/05/2021 23:15

@Mydogisagentleman an upstand is where the worktop extends vertically up the wall a little way - if you look at my photo, you can see that our upstand is about 4inches tall.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 11/05/2021 23:30

Our worktop is fake marble! Just didn't have the money for quartz or granite etc. (The upstand is the same) Still looks good though. We plan to extend in the next 5 years so didn't want to spend a lot on our refit. When we do our "forever" kitchen we will do it all in quartz. But I'd still go for the glass splashback as it's so easy to clean and looks so lovely.

Don't do it! It's a nightmare to keep clean, it shows up every speck of shite. I want to rip it off and replace with glass.

PickAChew · 11/05/2021 23:53

Paint is easier to change than tiles. Keep them neutral.

caringcarer · 11/05/2021 23:59

@missfritton65 I have stainless steel splashback and it is easy to clean. I just struggle to reach the top behind cooker as I am too short.

Redsquirrel5 · 11/05/2021 23:59

An upstanding is a section of the worktop that is about the size of a tile which goes on top of the worktop.

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 12/05/2021 05:30

Patterned encaustic here. They may not be entirely in fashion but they look fabulous and I love them.

Callmecordelia · 12/05/2021 06:06

I have no advice, but love Delft tiles, and am interested in how they would look in a contemporary setting.
